FRIENDS & LEGENDS
What's the first thing you noticed about this album when it came out?
That's right, the credits could only be read if you were on acid ... I
don't know what the art director was thinking, but hopefully we have
changed this for the reissue so as not to encourage the use of such
mind-altering substances ... Recorded in 1973, this is still one of my
fondest musical experiences... After the demise of Tumbleweed Recerds, my
contract was sold to MCA...Once again, producer Bill
Szymczyk put together and unbelieveable band for me to work with...
All the members came from Barnstorm and Stephen Stilis' Manassas
... Now this was a band!...Joe Walsh on guitar and synthesizer ...
Joe Vitale on drums, flute, synthesizer and vocals... Paul Harris on
keyboards and vegetables ...Ken Passarelli on bass... Joe Lala on
percussion... Al Perkins on pedal steel...and David Sanborn on alto
sax... No cheap meat here folks!... Recorded at Applewood Studios
in Goiden, Colorado ( connected to a liquor store and in the shadow of
the Coors factory)... There were no rehearsals, I would just sit in the
middle of the studio, play the song on acoustic guitar a few times, and
everyone would hash out an arrangement... A couple hours and you
had a track, not perfect, but inspired, which is what it should be all
about ... All eight lead vocals were done is one afternoon, one after
another ... I still love the tracks on this record and would just love
another chance at singing them... And now the tunes:
AMONG MY FRIENDS AGAIN ... Written for someone who came
back into my life to save the day ...
HELP ... O.K. we're on sacred ground here... what are you nuts,
mess with a Beatles song? Always a favorite of mine, I just started
doing it slow one day and liked the result.. . A friend of mine played it
for Lennon once who told him that this was the way he had originally
written the song... And just to keep a balance in the universe, my
royalties have been slower than his were...
YOURS FOR A SONG... The singie (well, not so you could notice it)
...The second acoustic guitar is only known recorded output of
Jonathan K. Bendis, a friend and fine guitar player, who went on to
fame and fortune as a producer for MTV and a dealer in vintage
Echoplex units (but that's another story. ah bunglee ?)...
LET'S GET THE SHOW ON THE ROAD... A late nighter with some
incredible alto work from then-unknown David Sanborn. . David
and Paul Harris are the only two people I've ever met who could
consistently make me happy in one take... This one was a live staple
of the Michael Stanley Band for years...
JUST KEEP PLAYING YOUR RADIO .. Reggae before it was
fashionable... Bill Szymczyk had discovered Jimmy Cliff and was
spreading the word ... Polish reggae played by white guys in
Colorado; it could have bee the next big thing... I still like this one a lot...
ROLL ON... Rocky Mountain mambo with some great stacked flutes
from Joe Vitale... The flutes were a last minute idea and Joe was back
in Ohio... We sent him a plane ticket.. He cashed it in, got himself a
rental car, taped newspapers over all the side windows and drove
straight (?) from Canton, Ohio to Netherland, Colorado... The car
pulled up, Joe got out in his platform shoes and leopard jacket and
said "Hi, I've got to go to the bathroom, then let's record"...Ah, the good old days!...
BAD HABITS...I don't know, but it sounds like we were having fun...
FUNKY IS THE DRUMMER... The only known recording of the
legendary Paul Harris Explosion... Yeah, it ain't "Bridge
Over Troubled Water" but it sure was fun and I got to introduce the band...
POETS' DAY... I don't remember the inspiration but it was
probably something about misunderstood artists... Hey I was
young, but I still like the track, especlally the fade...
This whole project was a joy to do and the musicians involved are
still some of my favorites... I thank them for their talent, friendship,
and good vibes (we still had those back then!)... Very special thanks
to David Spero and Bill Szymczyk for being there then and for being
here now... This was truly an album of Friends & Legends!
