Well, well, well . . .
Do you see a pattern emerging here? Didn't you just know that those
moguls over at Razor & Tie would get around to unleashing the first
two Michael Stanley Band albums on CD? Well, they have, folks, and
this is the one that started it all .. .l'm sitting in my studio looking at
the back cover and wondering whatever happened to those four inno-
cent dudes in the bell bottoms . . . and check out those lapels, you
could windsurf with those.. But, hey, I digress ... This album, under
the direction of the one and only Bill Szymczyk was a blast to make...
Fun in the sun gang as MSB hits Miami running, and the memories of
Criteria Studios, The Thunderbird Hotel and Tony Roma's (A Place
For Ribs) come drifting back .. . We actually all went into a studio and played the songs at the same
time, a concept that by today's standards is either archaic or radical, you make the call...We were
joined in the studio (most memorably) on keyboards by Paul Harris (known at the time in band lore as
the fifth "B") and his talent and grace under fire made the entire project all the more enjoyable ...
The usual schedule was a rocker in the afternoon and then, after a dinner break that only Szymczyk
could captain, a ballad at night (Let's see you try to rock after one of those!)... For me, the songs that
stand out are Jonah's Waste A Little Time On Me and Gypsy Eyes, and my Dancing In The
Dark and Where Have All The Clowns Gone / Song For My Children although on second
thought I have a very fond place in my heart for the frantic I'm Gonna Love You and Kos' Step
The Way ... Daniel Pecchio had just come off three albums with the very talented band Glass Harp
and we lifted (almost literally) Tommy Dobeck from what was then one of Cleveland's finest bands,
Circus . . . The pieces were starting to fall into place and we thought we could conquer the world...
Ah, the good old days. . .. Special love and kisses to our producer and friend Bill Szymczyk and to our
then-manager (and still friend) David Spero for guiding the babes through the woods ...Hey, it's not
Sgt. Pepper's, but you have to start somewhere, and this is where we did!
Michael Stanley, Cleveland, Spring 1994
P.S. Huey Chopburn, please call home!
