Haunted Places

Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California is said to be haunted by Sara Winchester who built the place to escape from the ghosts that haunted her.

London's Drury Lane Theater is said to be haunted by the "Man in Gray" since the 1930s. No one knows the origins of the "Man in Gray." Most people assume he is the ghost of a man whose skeleton was found in a secret room in the early 1800s with a dagger in his ribs.

The great acor, William Terriss, is said to haunt London's Adelphi Theater where he was killed by an envious fellow actor, Richard "Mad Archer" Prince, on Deember 16, 1897. Before he died, William Terriss is said to have told his mistress, who was his leading lady, that he would come back.

The luxury liner Great Eastern was said to have been haunted by the ghost of a workman who got trapped within the double hull of the ship while it was being constructed. There was constant hammering heard deep within the ship.

The most famous spectral ship is The Flying Dutchman. A spectral ship is entirely operated by the ghosts of dead crew members destined to wander the seas for all time. The Flying Dutchman is said to wander the seas looking for a port and luring seamen to their deaths.

England has several churches that are haunted. One is Westminster Abbey where the ghostly image of a monk is said to glide through the aisle. Another is Watton Priory in east Yorkshire, where the ghost of a nun, Elfrida, who fell in love with a monk was beaten by her fellow nuns and her child taken away from her. She died of a broken heart.

The New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia, where the Trail of Tears began, is said to be haunted by the Cherokee Indians to remind everyone of the wrong they suffered at the hands of white men.
