Chapter 29

“God, Isaac, that was fabulous,” Taryn said as she and Isaac made their way out of La Parisienne and back to the limousine.

Isaac nodded and nonchalantly took Taryn’s hand. “It was,” he agreed. “We’ll have to remember it for another time.”

Taryn tried not to notice that her heart had started racing as soon as Isaac touched her. She raised her eyebrows. “Is there going to be another time?” she asked.

Isaac grinned. “Maybe,” he said. “If you behave.”

The driver noticed Isaac and Taryn approaching. He got out of the car and opened the back door for them. When they were situated in the back seat, Isaac looked at Taryn.

“What would you like to do now?” he asked. “We have all night. Is there anything in particular you want to do or see?”

Taryn cocked her head. “You know what, Isaac?” she said. “I’ve ridden in lots of limousines, but I’ve never really gotten to enjoy one or think about the fact that I was really in one. Let’s just get out of town and ride around in this great car for a while.”

Isaac smiled. He slid the glass partition between to front and back seats open.

“I think we’d just like to go for a long drive out of town,” he told the driver.

The driver nodded. “Okay,” he said. “I know some nice, sort of country places to drive. You just let me know when you’re ready to head back into town.”

“Thanks,” Isaac said, closing the partition. Isaac settled back next to Taryn as the huge car began moving. He looked at her for a moment. “Can I kiss you?” he asked. He had wanted to do it all night.

Taryn smiled shyly. “Since when do you ask?” she said.

“Since we’re supposed to be on a date,” Isaac replied.

Taryn’s eyes met Isaac’s. “Yes,” she said. “You can.”

Isaac leaned in and brushed Taryn’s lips gently with his own. “I’m having a great time,” he told her, sitting back again.

Taryn smiled. “Me too,” she said.

Isaac slid the sunroof open. He stuck half his body out of the car and held his hand down to Taryn. “Come on,” he said. “This is the only way to see Tulsa after dark.”

Taryn grinned and stood next to Isaac. They leaned on the car roof as the scenery sped by.

“Do you know how crazy you are?” she half-yelled to Isaac.

Isaac turned his face up so that his long hair was flying straight back. “I have some idea,” he said.

They rode through all of downtown Tulsa that way, and as they headed out of town, Isaac and Taryn sank back into the car.

Isaac began flipping through a stack of CDs that were in a case on the limousine floor. “Anything you’re in the mood for?” he asked. “There’s a little bit of everything here.”

Taryn shook her head. “Not that I can think of,” she said. “You pick. I trust you.”

Isaac found a CD that made his heart jump. He looked outside and realized that the car was traveling down a fairly deserted gravel road on the outskirts of town. He slid the partition open. “Can you pull over for a minute?” he asked the driver.

The driver did as Isaac asked, and Taryn looked at Isaac in confusion. “What are you doing?” she asked.

Isaac grinned and popped in a CD. He fast- forwarded to the track he was looking for and pushed play.

“Do you remember this song?” he asked quietly.

Taryn listened for a moment. “Oh, Isaac,” she almost whispered.

The song was “Everything I Own” by Bread. Isaac and Taryn had danced to it on their first date in New York, almost two years earlier.

“So, do you want to dance?” Isaac asked hopefully.

Taryn gave Isaac a puzzled look. “Here?”

Isaac opened the car door and took Taryn’s hand. “Here,” he said.

Isaac helped Taryn out of the car. He left the door open so that they could clearly hear the stereo. He pulled Taryn close to him and buried his face in her hair as they swayed to the music under the full moon in the middle of the deserted road.

Taryn nuzzled into Isaac’s neck. “You’re nuts,” she said.

Isaac drew back and looked at Taryn as the gentle night wind ruffled her hair. He put his finger to her lips and shushed her. “Shhhh,” he said. “Listen to the words. Just shut up and dance.”

Taryn closed her eyes and laid her head on Isaac’s shoulder. She did as she was told and listened to David Gates croon.

I would give everything I own
give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
just to have you
back again
just to touch you
once again ...

Taryn marveled at how much she felt like a teenager again. Isaac made her feel so young and so vibrant.

Neither Taryn nor Isaac noticed the faces looking at them in amusement from the lighted windows of the few farmhouses that lined the road they were dancing on.

As the song ended, Isaac drew back from Taryn slowly and planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. “I love you,” he whispered.

Taryn took both of Isaac’s hands in hers, and they stood in the middle of the road looking up at the millions of stars that twinkled in the ebony sky. “Funny how that works,” she said. “I love you back.”

Isaac dropped one of Taryn’s hands and touched the side of her face. “I just can’t stop wanting to be with you,” he said, shaking his head.

Taryn smiled. “Good,” she said.

Isaac moved his hand up under Taryn’s hair. “It’s going to take time to get it back to where it was,” he said. “But you’re the mother of my children and I love you with all my heart. There may still be some rough spots and I may still backslide and be insecure sometimes. I’m giving you the option to get out now, because if you don’t you’re stuck with me.”

Taryn shook her head. “You’re the one who’s stuck,” she said. “Try to get rid of me.”

"I know I have no right to ask for promises," Isaac said. He knew he sounded like a pleading child, but he couldn't stop himself. "But I'm going to ask you to please, please promise to never leave me again."

Taryn smiled softly. "Isaac, I promise I will never leave you again."

Isaac and Taryn moved together and kissed. One kiss lead to another, and they got longer and more passionate. They were completely oblivious to the fact that anyone else was near them.

In the limousine, the driver watched Taryn and Isaac in the rearview mirror for a minute. He picked up a book off the seat next to him and smiled. It looked like it was going to be a long night.

But hey, he figured. That’s what he got paid for.
