bulletMeet & Greet
bulletTear Art
bulletBaby Wipe Tie-Dye

 Activity Information:

Name of Activity/description: “Meet & Greet” Students will make a puppet with the materials provided.  When finished the students will tell a story or some things about themselves holding the puppet in front of their face, like they are the puppet masters.

Curriculum Area: language development, motor skills

             Children: kindergarten ages 4-6

Assessment/Rationale: This activity is mainly used as a first day activity to let the kids get to know one another.  Children can begin to build on their communicating skills and also their artistic abilities.

Objective: Children will gain a better understanding among one another due to the students presenting their information about themselves to the class.  Children can begin to become comfortable talking to the class and this can foster their skills in language.

Space/Materials: paper plates, tongue depressors (colored opt.), googly eyes, markers, yarn-black, brown, yellow, red (to represent hair), and glue

 Procedure:

Introduction: The teacher/instructor can begin by using her or his puppet and begin to talk about themselves to the class.  Then the teacher will instruct the class on what they will be doing.

Teaching Sequence: This skill will be presented when the teacher begins to tell the class the information about herself/himself.  The students will then make their puppets and when finished use puppet to tell the class.

Closure:  Some activities that can follow may be letting the children find others with the same likes/dislikes.  Another could be is letting the children use the puppet and tell a principal or another teacher their story.

Evaluation:  Ask yourself questions: Did the children follow the procedure?  Did the children repeat the same information from others?

TEAR ART

Activity Information:

Name of Activity/Description:  “Tear Art” Students will paint with glue on black construction paper and then ‘tear’ scraps of colored paper and place them onto the black piece.  Children can create any scene, depending on the season; Thanksgiving scene will work for this one, since it is November.

Curriculum Area: art, language development, and fine motor skills

Children:  kindergarten or 1st grade, 4-7

Assessment/Rationale: I chose this activity because it lets the students create their own work with no prepared shapes or patterns.  Children can express their creativity using this form of art.  Their artwork of Thanksgiving may reflect on their own personal experience or ideas of this topic, which will result in individual work.

Objectives: Children will be able to express their feelings of Thanksgiving through ART.  Children will be able to understand another form of art to express their feelings through artwork.

Space/Materials: black construction paper, glue, colored scraps, may use tissue paper

 Procedure:

Introduction: Discuss with the students what they might see during whatever topic is being used, Thanksgiving.  Have students brainstorm what is seen during this time and allow questions to be asked to foster more ideas.

Teaching Sequence: Students will understand the concept of making whatever designs he or she wants to, there is no right or wrong.

Closure: The instructor can have the children tell about their pictures to the class.

Evaluation: Students will know one form of artwork to use in the future.  Children will know that is no right or wrong in art activities unless told otherwise.  Students will be able to make any scene or design using tear art.

Baby Wipe Tie-Dye

Concepts To Be Taught:

Students will comprehend concepts related to art, math and science using a fan technique making something they can be proud of.

Objectives:

Students will be encouraged to express and experiment with various colors, designs and patterns; learning about them first-hand.

Materials List:
bulletbox of baby wipes
bulletrubber band
bulletwater color markers
bulletsurgical gloves
bulletscratch paper

Learning Activities:

  1. Pass out the baby wipes, one per student.

  2. Give the students about four rubber bands.

  3. Direct the children to tie the rubber bands tightly around different sections of the baby wipe.  They can roll their baby wipe or fold it in different ways before they tie them.

  4. Have the students put on gloves and spread out the scratch paper in front of them because the rest of the steps get a bit messy.

  5. Have the students place the baby wipe on some scratch paper and color in between the rubber bands with the different color markers.  Make sure they press the markers to the wipe so the ink will go all the way thru.

  6. Have the students bring the wipes to the teacher so the rubber bands can be carefully cut off.

  7. Hand the wipes back to the students and allow them to open them up to see the beautiful and colorful design.

Evaluation:

Discuss the different patterns one can make using the tie dye technique then discuss the exercise with the children encouraging them to expound upon their favorite part.
