Quite soon after 'Giles', my '68 VW
Beetle had his first respray, I got involved in an
accident near my home which damaged the car quite badly.
After speaking with my boyfriend Dave, we decided to
start all over again. Only this time we had a few extra
ideas which we wanted to try out.
We took off all the panels, doors, windows etc and set about replacing the bodywork. Once the new wings and bonnet where fitted and the roof had been cut for the ragtop, the work started on respraying the car in it's new two tone colour scheme. After months and months of hard work, Giles was really starting to look nearly finished. The engine and interior had to be fitted and of course the ragtop still had to be done. Actually getting the car finished seemed to be the hardest part. After months of looking for the relevant bits and pieces, it was now the part of getting all of the pre'67 details to fit properly without anything getting damaged. New dashboard trims, door furniture, steering wheel and rear view mirrior all came out of storage and where gradually fitted to the car. Then it was the turn of Sid Phillips to set to work on the interior trim, seats, carpets and of course the all important ragtop. Finally, after over two years and many, many thousands of pounds, we could finally say the job was complete. There where still quite a few problems to be ironed out but there he was, all redone and ready to ride! |
