Today's Child

: Photography and the Arts

Back to Today's Child

  Back to Photography Page

Photography is an art form on it's own --it is the world in a photograph: the beauty, emotions, conflict, nature etc.

A child, having a unique perspective, can use a camera to explore their world, to show others what they see, what they feel is important.

Put a camera in the hands of a child and see the world from a different light!

But what can one do with a camera besides capture a moment in time?

Using the camera:
take close-up pictures, focusing on one part of an image
take pictures of other children in costume, depicting someone in a famous painting (like this)
take several pictures of the same thing, from different perspectives
after analyzing a famous painting, take a picture that depicts the same mood or thought
compile a serious of photos that shows the mood of a piece of music
take a picture through different materials: cellophane, lace, coloured glass, rain-covered window
take pictures of their world: family, friends, environment --the world from their perspective
pose for the camera, to enact part of a written story
take photos of things other than people to show "sad", "happy" and other emotions
don't forget the video camera (see this VidKids site)

Have you tried any of these??
Send me a scanned photo file and I will link it to this page.
I will give credit to the artist, of course.

..and then with the photos:
piece separate pictures together to make one image
compose a poem or story about a picture
use pictures of toys, stuffed animals, and people (etc.) in play activities
try "slide sandwiching" (wait till you see this site!! Thanks Phillip Dawson)**

  .....don't forget to come back!
paint on top of a photograph, perhaps changing hair colour, adding a smile etc.
place a paper or 'glass' over top of a picture and trace it, copying outlines and shadings
include the picture in a collage (with other pictures, with drawings and paintings, etc.)
using a photo-editing program, distort the picture
create black-and-white photos, line-drawing
cover picture frames, storage boxes, binder covers with pictures
print them out on transfer sheets and make quilts, wall hanging, t-shirts etc.
attach pictures to items, creating 3-d art
change the colours of parts of the picture
cut the picture into shapes to create a puzzle, or in letter shapes for murals
use the pictures in craft items, gifts etc.

The sky is the limit.
Let the imagination run wild.
See what the children come up with.
