Located on the central south coast of the British Isles....

The Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight, Title Image.

The Isle of Wight is both beautiful and possesses a rich and varied history.

It covers 147 square miles, with a coastline of 67 miles. Half of the Island is recognised as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', whilst much of the seashore is designated a Heritage Coast. The varied coastline has chalk cliffs, sandstone cliffs, sandy shores, saltings, marshes and river estuaries. Its beautiful, unspoilt countryside encompasses ancient forests, flower-strewn downs, rich farmland, river valleys, and has quaint little villages around almost every corner.

Dinosaur bones dating back 120 million years have been uncovered, and the Island is one of the best locations in Europe for finding fossils. There is a wonderful new museum which is dedicated to this period of the Islands history.

With a walk along some of the bridalways and footpaths, you can follow in the footsteps of the ancient Island peoples. Explore remains left by Stone, Bronze and Iron Age communities. Also, evidence of Roman occupation can be found at several locations, including two villas featuring well preserved baths and the famous 'Medusa' mosaic floor.

The Isle of Wight is like a condensed chronicle of England.

In Carisbrooke Castle you can almost feel the despair of an imprisoned Charles I, along with two of his children. His daughter Elizabeth died there, and is buried in one of the local churches.

There are also centuries old manor houses, working water mills and a wealth of historical buildings. The most famous of these must be the favourite residence of Queen Victoria.... Osborne House, designed by her beloved husband Albert, Prince Regent.

As a result of this royal approval, many artists, poets and writers lived on or visited the Island during the 19th Century. These included Joseph Turner, Julia Margaret Cameron, Tennyson, Keats and J.B. Priestley.

The Island is captivating and embracing, we welcome you to our Island!
