Verse Of The Month - August

LIGHTSHIPS

Read: Matthew 5:13-16

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. --Matthew 5:14

James Thiele was convinced that a new kind of blimp could be a perfect
advertising vehicle. But he needed a fresh idea to compete with the
bigger companies dominating most of the market. He was sitting on
a beach in Oregon talking with a friend when he saw the light--inside the blimp.

Since many televised events take place at night, he created a flying
platform that's lighted from the inside and highly visible in the
dark. Today his company's "Lightships" often steal the show from
other advertisers at big nighttime sporting events.

Are you tired of living in a dark world? Weary of the moral midnight
that surrounds you on campus, the murky thought patterns of peers
and professors, the oppressive sense of life gone wrong that may
pervade the place where you live? When it all seems a little too
much, think of yourself as one of God's "Lightships"--illuminated
within by the presence of Jesus Christ.

Jesus told His followers: "You are the light of the world. A city
on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put
it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light
to everyone in the house" (Matthew 5:14-15).

A paraphrase might say: "You are the lightships of the world. A lit-up
blimp in the night sky is hard to miss. It wouldn't make sense to
illuminate a dirigible and leave it inside a hangar. The advertisers
want it to fly so everyone can read their name."

God doesn't expect you to glow in the dark on your own. He's placed
the light of His life within every Christian, and that's why you
can point others to Jesus no matter where you are.

So today, in spite of the darkness, soar above it and shine with His light. --DM

REFLECTION
* What aspect of spiritual darkness in my present circumstances is most discouraging to me?
* How do Jesus' words "You are the light of the world" help me to
see that darkness in a different way?
* For more light on the subject, I will read John 1:1-14 and Philippians 2:14-16.

A little light can make a big difference in the dark.
