PALM SUNDAY IN ANTIGUA
Special flowers are made and sold for Palm Sunday
Girl dancers before "Christ" singing hosanna. They are both orphans I worked with for a day with my friend, Rachel.
One of the processions I stumbled across. Each church has one before Semana Santa.
This is a more intricate process using sawdust.
These are another style of alfombra that has to be all ready and cleaned up before the procession comes to walk on it.
Everyone in the family comes out to make their alfombra using pine needles and flowers, sometimes fruits and veggies too.
This is the team of actors and dancers narrating Palm sunday through the streets.
This was a team of people recreating Palm Sunday. It was very moving for me.
Men pay to dress as Roman soldiers for the procession.
5th Avenue in Antigua with the famous arch and the volcano in the background.
This float is carried by 80 men and weighs 7,000lbs!
All the men wear purple on the day of lent and black on Good Friday.
Each platform is carried by men of the church. They all have numbers and switch off. The men usually start at noon or as early as 10a.m. and go until midnight. Each platform tells a part of Christ's trial and crucifiction.
This is the famous Jesus from LaMerced with glass eyes that look right at you when it passes by.
This is my best shot. Haze is from the incense.
After Jesus, Mary always is carried behind by the women of the church.
This is the sad sight after the procession has passed. Nothing but trash and brown dust.
