||
Plans for the Greece and Italy international are in full swing with Henson Park the likely venue. The ground is close to the Greek community of Marrickville and Earlwood while the Italian community of Leichhardt is also close by.No date has been set Saturday September 27 is the most likely date. "We are in the process of confirming the date and venue in order for us to start promoting the game.We need all the Rugby League community not just Greeks and Italians to get behind this venture" said Greek Rugby League founder Colin Mylonas. Both the Greek and Italian Rugby League are planning to make it a family event with rides,jumping castle,face painting on show.NRL players with Greek and Italian backgrounds will also be invited to attend the match. The GRL will play a warm-up match in late August/ early September against a Student Invitational side at Norford Park.There are plans to also involve the Italians but they are committed to staging there own tournament in Padova Italy this month. The GRL have struck a deal with Cos Sports who will be manufacturing the playing gear for the Greeks.Merchandise will be available to the public during the game against Italy. The jersey design that GRL have been looking at was the one worn by Canterbury in the early 1970s that featured large blue and white bhorizontal stripes.The official colours of Greece are blue and white. "The jersey design and logo at this stage is not important.We can change this whenever we want.We went to get a couple of games under our belt and then start building from that.We want to be able to clear the cobwebs because there is plenty of hard work in front of us" said Mylonas. Greece will also feature in the World Senvens qulifiers early next year and are planning a short trip to New Caledonia in February 2004. "We are planning to stay four or five days play a a match and head back.It would be a reward for the players as well as helping the game in New Caledonia" said Mylonas. "We already have a list of 60 potential players and we will be contacting them in the next few weeks" said Mylonas. "We have just over two months before our first match and everybody is excited at the prospect of playing Rugby League for Greece" Training will commence shortly under captain-Coach Steve Georgallis who himself played first grade with Wests,Easts and the West Tigers. The GRL will hope that interest generated from the game will help introduce the game in Greece. "Myself and Terry Liberopoulos will be travelling to Greece later in the year to look at the resources and make contact with the Universities" said Mylonas Article from RUGBY LEAGUE REVIEW Click Here For More Match Results Click Here To Talk About This Article In The Forum
