Game Report

Greece made their Rugby League debut with a 26-0 win over New Caledonia in a trial match held at Sydney's Norford Park on August 31.

The Greeks players only came together an hour before the game as they start their preperations for the match against Italy later this month.

Winger Theo Trikkaliotis rode his push bike more than 20km from Mascot to Chester Hill with boots hanging off to play in the game. Prop forward Michael Giorgas paid his own way from Brisbane to be involved.

The Greeks opened the scoring when second rower Michael Parzokonis barged over to score after yet another mistake from New Caledonia.

Kim Pizanias went close to scoring in the 12th minute only to be brought down centimetres from the try line. New Caledonia finally entered the opposition's half a minute later on the back of two penalties.

Giorgas put Greece further ahead when he burst through the defence to race 35 metres and score under the posts in the 20th minute.

He added another four pointer three minutes later when New Caledonia made a mess of a York Antoniou bomb. Adam Cowell collected the ball and passed to an unmarked Giorgas to make it 16-0.

Greece scored again four minutes into the second term when Stan Cominos went over thanks to a wonderful pass from Sam Mournehis.

New Caledonia registered their first try when winger Gefo Taofifenua raced 50 metres to score in the 32nd minute.

Harry Pavlidis replied a couple of minutes later when Pizanias threw a long cut out pass along the back line.

Taofifenua crossed for his second try when he used exceptional pace to run 60 metres to the try line pulling his hamstring for his trouble along the way.

"I was proud of our boys today. Nobody knew each other before today but they all gave it a go. We have 10 or so players still to come in the team and I am happy how everything is progressing" said Steve Georgallis coach of Greece.
