Ionio Cup Battle On Again

Greece will make a decision later this month on the date and venue of their match against Italy in the battle of the Ionio Cup.

The Italians are looking at hosting the match at Marconi Stadium on October 2 but the Greek Rugby League will look at other options if the match can't go ahead.

"We have been approached by a couple of other nations to play a game in Sydney but we can't make a decision until we know what is happening with the Italians: said Greek RL Founder Colin Mylonas who will travel to Greece later this month to finalise plans for next year's match against Russia in Athens.

A small group of ex-patriot Greek Australians will begin playing touch football in Athena with as many as 60 players involved. The Greek RL has sent them footballs and other material to help them with getting to know the game.

"We want them to start playing touch football so that the locals can get used to playing with an oval shaped ball. We will then advance to playing oz-tag before introducing them to full scale Rugby League" said Mylonas.

The Rugby League International Federation have also spoken to Greece with a view of playing in the European Nations Cup against the likes of Russia, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

"Our first aim is to play some domestic games in Athens as well as staging our international game with Russia in October of next year. Once we have completed that we can look at playing in the European Nations Cup which would be fantastic for the Greek RL" said Mylonas.
