It's All Greek To Stuart

Illawarra Steelers Jersey Flegg full-back Stuart Philpott is one player that has the potential to play in the NRL competition.

The Illawarra Wests junior can also play five-eight and it was in this position last season that he was man of the match in last year's Illawarra reserve grade competition when Wests beat Collegians 30-18.

Philpott who turns 20 this month was called into the Illawarra SG Ball side in 2002 after impressing officials.

He represented the Steelers in the Jersey Flegg competition before returning to play with Illawarra Wests.

Philpott's mother is Greek while his dad is from Port Kembla hence the Anglo-Saxon name.

Philpott has represented Greece in two internationals. The first against Italy at Oki Jubilee Oval last year where they lost 26-24 and then upset New Caledonia in the recent tour to Noumea.

So how does someone with a name like Pilpott qualify to play for Greece?

"My mum is from Peloponese which makes me Greek. I am proud of my background and to be involved with the Greek Rugby League is fantastic" said Philpott.

He was made aware of the Greek RL by coach Peter Yatras while at training one day.

"Peter would always say that Greeks were the best and everyone soon found out I was one of them. Someone told me that one of the locals in Lee Doulis was in the squad" said Philpott.

"Paul Everill from Steelers club game me the forms and the rest is history."

So how does it feel to be an international before having even played Premier League let alone NRL?

"It's unreal. The Greek RL is very professional and well run. I wasn't sure at the start but they are doing such a good job. The trip to New Caledonia was sensational. The best tour i have been involved with" said Philpott.

Philpott is aiming to play Premier League football with the Dragons this year and has put on seven kilograms of muscle in the off-season to make sure that becomes reality.
