Greece Moving Forward

The Greek Rugby League have indicated that they will be heading to Athens in 2006 after putting it on hold for 12 months.

Greece are yet to announce who they will play but Russia looks the likely opponent. Other nations that could head to Greece include Malta, Italy and Serbia. The matches could also serve as World Cup qualifiers.

"If we get another country that wants to come and play in Athens then we will look at staging a triangular series. Teams would have to pay for their own way but it would be a wonderful experience for any side" said Greek RL Manager Colin Mylonas.

Greece is still keen on playing in the Mediterranean Cup next year and will compete if they're invited. They pulled out of the 2005 tournament after the Lebanese Rugby League could not guarantee the land costs they had promised.

"We are happy to play in Lebanon and then head over to Greece but we need assurances from the Lebanese Rugby League within the next couple of months" said Mylonas.

Greece will stage their international in October 2006 and we be staging a domestic competition during the same month.

The Greek RL will be taking a squad of 30 to 35 players from Australia and England to play in the international. The Greek RL have already had interest from 40 to 50 players that live in Greece that are keen on playing.

"We will break our players evenly into four teams and mix them with the local players. This will help the newcomers adapt to the game" said Mylonas.

The Greek RL will stage a short domestic competition with each side playing each other once. The two leading sides will then take on each other in the final which would be played as a curtain-raiser to the main international.

"Of course some of the established players would have to miss the final as they would be playing for Greece but there are plenty of other players that would be willing to take their place" said Mylonas.

Co-Manager Terry Liberopoulos visited Greece recently to get things rolling while Mylonas will be heading to Greece early in the new year.

Greece are likely to take on Fiji A prior to heading to Europe next year with the Greeks set to host the Game. A venue has yet to be decided but Oki Jubilee Oval scene of the Greece vs Italy game in 2003 which saw the Italians score a last minute 26-24 win.

Other venues being considered are Belmore Sportsground and Henson Park with a decision set to be announced soon.
