Quito is perhaps my favourite South American capital. At about 2,850 metres above sea level it has a spring-like climate. It is scenically located at the foot of the Pichincha volcano (4,794 metres). Quito was placed on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. |

This is Plaza San Francisco. It is named for the magnificent church (1534) and convent of San Francisco. The plaza is crowded with street vendors. The church is said to be the oldest built in South America by the Spanish. It has a sumptuous high altar and the walls and ceiling are covered with gold leaf. |
