Chapter 12

Jill set out to deliver the letters at 12:00. Her dad had been sleeping for hours and her mom was on a business trip, so she had no trouble sneaking out.

First she went to Zellary's house house. She did a quick check of the house and saw that no lights were on. Then she walked up to the porch and put the letter in the mailbox. "I hope it's this easy to deliver Zac and Taylor's letters," thought Jill as she started walking toward their house.

In about ten minutes she reached the Hanson house. There was one light on, so Jill took extra care as she walked up the porch stairs. She lifted the lid of the mailbox and put the two envelopes inside, the she closed it just as carefully as she had opened it. When she got down the stairs, she thought she was off the hook ans started walking home.

As soon as she started walking, she saw Zac walking toward her in the direction of his house. She hoped he wouldn't recognize her in the dark, but her face had stuck in Zac's mind so well after that day at the mall that Zac would have been able to hunt her down blind.

"Jill, what are you doing in my neighborhood so late?"

"I should ask the same of you."

"I live here."

"Then why aren't you in your house?"

"I was at Zellary's house."

"This late? You animal!"

"I had taken her some soup."

"Aw! How sweet!"

"Shut up, Jill."

"Make me."

"What are you doing here?"

Jill was caught off guard. "Walking my dog."

"Where is he?"

"Dead."

"I don't wanna know. Yes I do. Why are you walking your dead dog?"

"I would always take Princess out for a midnight walk, and when she died I couldn't get over it and I still must walk her. Princess, your spirit lives on!"

"Join drama club, Jill. I'll see you later. Hopefully not, though."

"Bye Zac."

Jill then returned to her house and went to sleep.

I woke up the next morning feeling much better. I decided to go to school. I got ready and left the house. On my way out, I grabbed the mail. There were mostly bills and catalogues of office supplies, but there was one letter for me. I grabbed it and opened the envelope as I walked to the bus stop. Ronnie was already there.

"Who's the letter from?"

"I haven't read it yet."

I finally got the envelope open and read the letter. It was from Zac. As I read it, I must have gotten a worried expression on my face because Ronnie asked what was wrong.

"It's Zac. He's dumping me for Jill," I said and burst into tears. Ronnie tried to comfort me, but she was no help. As we rode the bus to school I resolved never to talk to Zachary Walker Hanson again.

~*~*~

As usual, Taylor was the first one to wape up in the Hanson house. He walked down stairs and poured himself a glass of orange juice. Then he sat down on the couch and started watching cartoons, Soon Zac and Ike joined him. The rest of the family wouldn't be up for at least an hour, they knew, so they could relax for a little bit. Soon they heard the mailbox bang, singaling that the mail had arrived.

"I wonder how many fan letters we got today," said Isaac. This was a game they often played. They called it "Guess How Many Fan Letters We're Going To Get Today".

"My guess is fifty," said Taylor.

"At least a hundred," said Zac.

"Don't even say it, Ike, we know what your guess is," said Taylor commenting that Isaac guessed sixty nine every day. These numbers would be a lot higher, but they didn't include the thousands of letters that came to their post office box every day.

Taylor went out and got the mail. The fan letters were in a gumband. The mailman had somehow become aware of their little game and put a post it note on top of the bundle with the number. It was seventy two.

"Closest to retail price without going over wins," said Ike with a smile, since he almost never won.

"Yea, Ike. You won. But, Zac and I have mail and you don't," said Taylor as he handed Zac his letter ans started opening his. It was form Zellary. As he read it his heart soared. Then he saw Zac's face and guessed that his letter was also from Zel. Zac looked at Taylor and then ran out of the room swearing and saying that he would never speak to her again.

Taylor sat down on the couch and picked up Zac's letter and read it. The he handed both letters to Ike who had a curious look on his face.

"Man. What are you going to do?" asked Ike when he was done reading.

"I don't know. I want to ask Zel out, but do you thing Zac will be mad?"

"He's twelve. He'll be mad, but he'll get over it. Besides, it will be a learning experience for him."

"Okay. I'll call her when she gets home from school."
