Chapter 13
The truth was that Isaac did feel a little bit sorry for Zac, but he didn't thing that that should stop Taylor from asking Zellary out. Isaac knew how much Tay loved Zel, for he had told him the first day Zellary had come to babysit. Isaac suspected that Taylor would have told Zac too if he hadn't expressed so much interest in her.
Isaac, being the oldest brother, decided to go talk to Zac. He found him laying on the couch in the den crying. Zac was laying face down, so he couldn't see who had come in.
"Taylor, go away," he said.
"It's Ike."
"Oh, hey, Ike," Zac said and tried to pretend he hadn't been crying, but it didn't fool Isaac.
"You liked her that much, huh?" asked Ike and sat down on the couch next to his brother.
"Yea. She was just...everything."
"There will be other girls, Zac."
"But not like Zel."
"How can you know? She's the only one you've ever dated."
"But I know lots of girls, and there's none that have what she has."
"What does she have that's so special?"
"Well...I don't know. But, I don't know anyone else who has it."
"Zac, how many other girls do you know?"
"Well, there's Ronnie, and...oh, you're right. The only girls I know really well are Zel and Ronnie. But Zel did have something special."
"Zac, I'll tell you what. There's a dance for homeschool kids across Tulsa on Saturday. Technically, you're too young, but I'll sneak you in. You're bound to find some girls you like there."
"Only for them to meet Taylor and leave me."
"Taylor's not going."
"Why not?"
"I don't know. He just said he didn't want to."
"Oh. Well, okay."
"Good."
"Ike?"
"What?"
"What should I wear?"

That day in school I again couldn't face Jill. I just avoided her as much as possible, and when I did have to see her at our locker, I nearly slammed the door on her fingers.
At the end of the day I told Jill that I couldn't go to cheerleading because I had to start dinner. That wasn't a total lie. I did have to start dinner, but not for several hours.
When I got home, Brandon sensed something was wrong.
"Did you finally find out the truth about Zac?"
"Zac who?"
"Zac's history."
"Why?"
"He left me for Jill."
"Jill who?"
"You don't wanna know."
"Yes I do."
"She's this really evil girl in my class."
"Is this Jill Elm?"
"Yea. How'd you know?"
"Bobby Appleton's her cousin. He said that when she comes over to his house, she forces him to tell her who he likes, and then she makes fun of him even if it's someone hot."
"That seens like something Jill would do."
"Glad I don't know her. Hey, Zel."
"Yea."
"I'm sorry."
"Oh, Brandon. Come here and give me a hug."
"Eew! No!"
"Good luck with life, Brandon."
"Whatever."

It was 5:00. "She must be home by now," thought Taylor and dialed the number.
"Hello."
"Is this Zellary?"
"Yea, who's this?"
"Taylor."
"Oh, hey," said Zellary sounding confused. "What are you calling for?"
"Um, Zel, will you go out with me?"
"Is this some kind of joke?"
"No. Why would it be?"
"Me and your brother just broke up and you're asking me out. Don't you have any sympathy?"
"But I thought I was the reason that you and Zac broke up."
"You're dreaming, Tay. Bye."
"Well, okay. Bye," and Taylor hung up the phone feeling very confused. He sat down on the bed and stared at the wall for about five minutes before Ike came in.
"Well, how'd it go?"
"She said no."
"Why? According to the letter, she had the major hots for you."
"That's what puzzles me."
"Do you still have the letters?"
"Yea."
"Let me see them."
Taylor took the letters out of his pocket and handed them to Ike. Ike looked at the letters very carefully and then said, "Is Marc on speed dial?"
"I think number 5," replied Taylor as Isaac pushed the button on the nightstand phone.
"Hello."
"Hello, is this Marc?"
"Yea. Who's this?"
"Isaac, Zac's brother."
"Oh. What do you want?"
"Do you know anyone named Jill?"
