Chapter 6

"Then Ms. Patterson said Jill and I had to introduce ourselves and Jill said she liked cheerleading. I'm going to have to put up with her then too!" I said.

It was lunch. I was telling Ronnie and Marc about the adventure I had with Jill in homeroom. I was in Ronnie's English class and Marc's science class, but I didn't have time to talk to them.

"Well, the captain of last year's squad was a 8th grader and now she's at the high school. Maybe they'll choose you as the new captain and you can boss Jill around," Ronnie said.

"Yea right. I didn't even go to this school last year. They're not gonna make me captain."

"They might."

"I dunno."

Just then Jill walked over to our table.

"Hi, Zel. Can I sit here? Thanks! I don't know your friends. Hi, I'm Jill."

"We know," said Ronnie and Marc.

"Zel, are you going to try out for the cheerleading squad?" asked Jill.

"Maybe," I said. "Yes, and I'm gonna kick your butt!" I thought.

"That's great! So am I! We can get to know each other even better! I was the captain of my squad in Nashville. We almost made it to the Nationals."

"Really, could you show us one of your cheers?" asked Marc. I could tell that he had a plan, but I had no idea what it was.

"Okay!" said Jill, not suspecting anything, but egar at the chance to show off.

Jill got up and started her cheer. She was good enough to make a squad, but I didn't think she had what it took to be the captain. A little bit into her cheer, Marc stuck his foot out and tripped her. She fell and landed butt first on the carpeting.

"Hey!" exclaimed Jill. "Why'd you do that?"

"Muscle spasams," said Marc.

"No, you did that on purpose!" she yelled. "I'm not sitting with you any more!"

"We're hurting," said Marc sarcastically. Then she left and sat at her own table.

"Good one, Marc," I said.

"Thanks," he answered.

Then I told Ronnie and Marc about my introduction.

"Now my nickname in homeroom is Fiona Spice. You know, a cross between Fiona Apple and Baby Spice."

"Oh. At least they don't call you anything like Spare Tire," said Marc.

"Who's Spare Tire?"

"That girl over there who takes up two seats. Her real name is Tracy Klien," answered Marc.

"Oh."

After that, Ronnie, Marc, and I compared scheduals for the rest of the day. We were all in the same study hall, but that was it.

Soon, lunch was over and we went to our lockers to get our afternoon books. When I saw Jill, she didn't say anything to me for a change. We went to out separate classes, and before we knew it, the day was over. The good news was that Jill and I weren't in any of the same classes. The bad news was that we would be seeing eachother at try out practice that night.

I met Ronnie by the gym and we went into the locker room to change. There were a lot of girls who were also trying out. I recognized Jill, Tracy, and the Oriental girl from my homeroom right away, and there were lots of other prople I had seen around school.

After we changed, we went into the gym and sat on the bleachers. Soon, a woman in her mid twentys and another in her mid thirtys came out and began to talk to us. The thirty-something one started.

"Hello, girls, I'm Mrs. Lawrence and I'm the cheerleading advisor and manager, and this is my assistant and your coach Miss Powers."

"Is she related to Austin?" one girl in the group asked jokingly, and all her friends laughed.

"That's enough of your smart mouth for this year, Jamie," said Mrs. Lawrence. "Okay, girls, this is how the try outs will work. Today and tomorrow, we'll learn a shory dance and a cheer. Then, at home, you'll have to make up your own short dance. Next Monday, you'll perform all three for Miss Powers and I, and we will choose the best sixteen of you for the squad. The top scorer out of those sixteen will become the captain."

Mrs. Lawrence went on to explain what we would be judged on and what we would have to do as cheerleaders. After she was done talking, Miss Powers taught us a cheer, and then it was time to go home. In the locker room I told Ronnie my idea.

"Ronnie, I have a great idea for my dance."

"What?"

"I'm going to dance to that cool remix of "MMMBop"."

"Hey, cool! I have no clue what I'm gonna do. Maybe "The Train"."

"That's cool," I said.

"Hey, guys, guess what?" asked Jill interrupting.

"What, Jill?"

"I'm giong to do my dance to "MMMBop", you know, the cool dance version."

There goes that idea.
