Chapter 1

Graduation day. The day we are officially done with school, and now we move on to the real world. That was what I was thinking as I waited for my name to be called on June 2, 1999, at my high school graduation.

"Natalie Merchant," said the principal. I'm not the singer Natalie Merchant, it's just a coincidence. I stood and went up to the podium to receive my diplomia. Then I returned to my seat. Unfortunately, we were forced to sit in alphabetical order. That ment that I could sit nowhere near my best friends Alyse Long, Erica Anderson, Nadine Kiger, and Yasmine Johansen.

After the principal was done calling the names, he announced Nadine as valadvictorian. Nadine is my very best friend, so I stood up and cheered loudly because I knew it would embarras her. She gave me the look she always gives me in situations like this (which are quite often), and I sat down.

Nadine made her speech and, as usual, it got a rousing applause from everyone. After Nadine returned to her seat, the principal came back to the podium. "I now give you the class of 1999!" he said as we all threw our hats in the air.

An hour after the ceremony, there was a party at my house. Nadine, Alyse, Erica, and Yasmine were there along with some of our other friends. After the perty, Nadine, Alyse, Erica, and Yasmine stayed to hang out.

"I can't believe we never have to go to that awful high school again!" said Nadine.

"I know! This is like the biggest shock since we were seniors!" added Erica.

"But think," said Alyse, "after this summer we're never going to see each other again."

"Yes we will," siad Yasmine.

"We can write letters," said Nadine.

"But it won't be the same," said Alyse.

"We should make the most of this summer," said Nadine.

"I know! We should take a trip together. I heard about this place in Lancaster that does murder mystery weeks," I said.

"What are they?" asked Yasmine.

"It's where you got to this huge mansion for a week and they have people pretend to be killed and you have to figure out who the murderer is by the end of the week," I said.

"That sounds cool," said Yasmine.

"We should definately go," said Alyse.

"Okay, I'll make the reservations for next week," I said.
