Chapter 19

"Get off me you creep!" screamed Sydney.

"Aww, Nadine!"

"Nadine?" said Sydney. Confused, whoever it was released his embrace.

His eyes must have adjusted to the lack of light because he said, "You're not Nadine!"

"No kidding!" said Sydney.

"JC, is that you?" I asked.

"Yea."

"How'd you get here? I thought you were still in the hospital," I said.

"I was," started JC, "but then Josh was allowed to leave and I was all alone with this girl who sneaked into my room and pretended to be my sister. Her name was Nicki, and she stayed for a few days, and she was cool, but I'm still in love with Nadine. A few housr after Josh and Nadine left, I decided to leave too, so Nicki dressed up like a nurse and put me in a wheelchair even though I couls walk kinda okay with my crutches, and she took me on the elevator. We ditched the wheelchair on the third floor and then got in Nicki's car and she drove me here.

"When I got here the front door was locked," said JC.

"That's odd. They don't even lock the front door late at night," I said.

"That's what I thought too," said JC. "So I walked around the house trying to find an unlocked door. Finally I found one. I opened it and was in this passage, so I just walked around trying to feel for a door to get to the main hallway. Then I heard the singing, and I thought it kinda sounded like Nadine, so I followed the sound. When I got here I embraced who I thought was Nadine, but now I know it's Sydney. Sorry about that."

"It's okay," said Sydney.

"So what are you guys doing here?" asked JC.

"Well," I started and told him that we were catching the murderer and how we were gonna do it. While I was telling JC the story, in the corner of my mind I was thinking about the front door being locked. There must be a reason, and somehow I didn't think it was a good one.

~*~*~

In my short stay, I had found out many things about the mansion. I could tell that this was not an ordinary place. There had been a murder this past week, several if I had put the bits and pieces of conversation I overheard together right. Something needed to be done to stop the sick person who had murdered ten people in one week, and I was going to be the one to stop him or her.

I didn't think that anyone who was staying at the mansion was the murderer, so someone must have came in to preform each murder and then left quickly. To put a stop to this person's evil plans, I'd locked the front door.

I was on my way to lock the only other enterence I'd known of, the door in the secret passage. I knew there was an enterence to the secret passage throught the freezer in the kitchen, so that's where I was going. However, when I passed the living room, I stopped. The girl who had let me in last night was sitting on the couch crying. When I came in, she looked up.

"Why are you still here?" she asked.

"Bob does not know."

"Oh."

"Why is you crying?"

"Well, it's just that my boyfriend isn't here, and I really wanted us to be together for the masquerade tonight."

"Was your boyfriend one of the ones who was murdered?"

"Yea. I really miss Chris. I can't wait for this all to be over and have Chris back with me."

"You do know people dead can't live again? Even Bob know that."

"Well, this think is that Chris isn't really dead."

"Bob no understand."

"What's going on here is a game where people pretend to be dead and everyone has to figure out who the murderer is."

"You mean, no real murdered? Just pretend?"

"That's right."

I was surprised. "Oh, so Bob no have to lock entrences to house."

She was confused. "Whatever."

"Chris be back soon, Erica," I said to make her feel better.

"Thanks," she said. "Bob, until Chris comes back, would you like to go to the masquerade ball with me? As friends?"

"Okay," I said. This was what I wanted more than anything, to have a friend.

~*~*~

Natalie finished telling the story, and then JC asked us a few questions. We told him about Justin and Alyse getting married. He was surprised, but happy about that.

"Hello, shouldn't we be concentrating on catching the murderer here?" Sydney asked impatiently.

"Sydney's right," I said. "Sydney, sing again."

She started with a new song, "Stay The Same" by Joey McIntyre. A few minutes into the song, a new voice echoed through the passage.

"Sydney, is that you?"
