Chapter 9

I was having the best dream. There was a beach, in Hawaii I think. Justin was there. So was I.

"Oh, Justin! This is so beautiful!" I said.

"I knew you'd like it here, Alyse. I have something for you."

"What is it?"

"It's a surprise. Close your eyes," he said and I did as he told me. I could feel him put something on me, but I didn't know what it was.

"Okay, you can open your eyes."

I looked down and saw a lei of purple flowers around my neck. "Oh, Justin!" I exclaimed and threw my arms around him and started kissing him. All of a sudden a wave crashed into us and we fell to the sand with a loud thud.

"Wait a minute," I thought, "we were too far from the water to get wet. And that thud was way too loud to be in a dream..."

I opened my eyes and bolted out of bed. My foot hit someone's face as I tried to stand up, and I screamed. I looked down and saw Yasmine's body on the floor and screamed again. Then there was a knock on the door. "Alyse, Yasmine, what happened?" someone called from the hallway. It was Natalie. I walked to the door and let her in.

"What happened?" she asked. She had obviously been sleeping, for she was in green plaid boxers with a purple tank top, and her hair was a mess.

"Yasmine's dead," I said.

"Dead or "dead"?" she asked.

""Dead", I think," I answered.

"I'll take her pulse," Natalie said and ran to Yasmine. "She has a pulse."

"That's good, right?" I asked.

"Right."

Then Yasmine started laughing.

"Yas, you are so evil pretending to be dead like that!" I yelled.

"No, I'm really supposed to be dead, you're just too funny not to laugh at," Yasmine said.

"Oh, lay back down," said Natalie and pushed Yasmine back to the floor.

"Hey, Nat, look," I said and pointed to something on the floor. "What is it? I can't see, you know I'm blind without my contacts."

Nat picked the item up. "They're dentures."

"I didn't know you wore dentures, Yasmine," I said.

"I don't you idoit. They're evidence," said Yasmine.

"Oh, who would wear dentures?" I asked.

"Leyse, you are such an idoit. Fred," said Natalie.

"No. Fred couldn't be the murdered, could he?" I asked.

"He was mad when Gertie died. Maybe he wanted revenge," said Natalie.

"But why? Yasmine didn't kill her. No one did."

"Old people get crazy sometimes, you know?"

"Actually, no."

"Well, they do. He's now a suspect in my book."

I looked at my watch, then realized that I couldn't see it. "Nat, hand me my contact case, please," I said.

"Where is it?"

"Nightstand."

Nat gave me the case, and I inserted the contacts. Then I looked at my watch.

"Nat, it's 7:30. We only have 30 minutes until breakfast. You better get ready."

"I think I'll go like this."

"Darling, you have green plaid and purple on. Erica will kill you for clashing."

"Choose a different wording before I get freaked out, and I'm making a statement."

"Erica will be really mad at you. At least brush your hair and get some shoes on."

"Okay. Can I use your brush?"

"Sure."

"Can I borrow some shoes too? I'm feeling too laid back to walk back to my room."

"It's right next door."

"I know. Lance has been rubbing off on me."

"I'd let you borrow a pair, but they'll be too big on you."

"Then I'll wear Yasmine's."

"Don't even think about it," said Yasmine.

"Fine then. I'm going barefoot."

"No, you're not," I said.

"Yes I am."

"Wear my shoes."

"They're too big. I'll trip."

"Oh, like you don't trip in your four inch platforms."

"Hey, I've never hurt myself."

"Not that badly."

"I've never broken any major bones."

"You're right. Ankles don't count as major bones."

"Exactly."

"Fine then, go barefoot. Then everyone will know how short you are."

"Five foot is not short."

"Not if you're a munchkin."

"Exactly."

"You're impossible."

"I know."

I finished getting dressed, and Nat and I went to breakfast.

"Hey, Nat, you look shorter today," said Lance.

I gave her a look, but she ignored me.

"Must be the lighting. Sarah, fix the lighting," said Nat.

"But we're not in the studio," said Sarah.

"We usually aren't."

"Then you'll just have to look short."

"I am short, okay! I only look average height because I wear platform shoes that I can't walk in!"

"Yea, that's nice, Natalie. Where's Yasmine?" asked Joey.

"Oh, she's dead."

"Dead?" Joey said with a gulp.

"Yea. Just like Chris and the others," said Natalie.

"Oh, you had me scared for a second there," Joey said.

"Could we please not mention Chris before I have another emotional breakdown?" said Erica.

"Sorry."

Then Josh walked over and sat down at our table next to Nadine. He gave her a tiny kiss on the cheek. "Don't we look lovely today?" he said.

"Hey, man, stay away from my girl!" said JC. "Don't you belong at some special little staff table or something?"

"Um, no," Josh said.

"JC, I'm not your girl," said Nadine.

"And let me guess, you think you're this baboon's girl," said JC.

"This baboon has a name, and it's Josh," said Nadine.

"Well my name's Josh too ya know," said JC.

"Hey, man, just stay away from Nadine," said Josh.

"Make me!" JC said and stood up.

"Man, don't go there," said Josh.

"Brother, you wanna take this outside?"

"No thanks. I can give it right here!" said Josh and punched JC in the face.
