Chapter 5

"From the bottom of my broken heart, there's just a thing or two I'd like you to know. You were my first love, you were my ture love, from the first kisses to the very last rose. From the bottom of my broken heart, even though time may find me somebody new. You were my real love, I never knew love til there was you..."~Britney Spears, "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart"

The next morning everyone gathered around the dining room table for breakfast.

"Natalie, where's Scott?" Lance asked when he realized that Scott wasn't there.

"Oh, he's a late sleeper," said Natalie. "He probably won't be up til noon or so."

"Oh," said Lance. "Do you still ride horses?"

"Well, I haven't in a while because Scott refuses to let me have a stable built, but I really miss it."

"I have some horses," said Lance. "Do you wanna go riding this morning while Scott's still asleep?"

"Sure, that'd be great!" said Natalie. "Let me just finish this pancake and then put on some long pants, and then I'll be ready."

"Okay!" said Lance, excited at the prospect of spending some time alone with Natalie. Not that he thought anything would happen, but he was still excited.

While Natalie was getting ready, Lance went out to the stable and saddled two horses. Soon, Natalie joined him.

"You ready?" said Lance.

"Yeah," said Natalie as she mounted her horse. Lance did the same.

"There's some trails through the woods. I thought we could do some of them," said Lance.

"Okay," said Natalie following him into the woods.

They rode in silence for a while. Finally Lance decided to break the silence.

"So, what's your life like in London?" he asked.

"Good," said Natalie. "I don't do much but sit around the pool and go to all of Scott's fancy record company parties and dinners, but it's pretty good."

Lance could just picture Natalie dressed in a fancy ball gown sitting at a table with expensive linen eating caviar and lobster on a regular basis. It really fit the image of what it seemed like she had become: a rich little snob.

"Nat, you've changed," said Lance.

"I have?" said Natalie.

"Yeah. Six years ago you were really down to earth and just normal, and now it seems that you're just into money and fancy clothes and stuff."

"It's not like that, Lance," she said.

"Well it sure seems like it," said Lance. "Probably happened from marrying that Scott," he said under his breath.

"What did you say?" said Natalie snapping at him. He thought he had said it quietly enough, but apperantely not.

"Nothing," said Lance trying to brush it off.

"You said something about Scott, didn't you?"

"Maybe."

"I knew you wouldn't like him," said Natalie.

"How'd you know that?"

"I just knew."

"No really, tell me how."

"You guys are just different," said Natalie.

"How so?"

"You just are. You're like more quiet and sweet and stuff where Scott is more brash."

"You still think I'm sweet?" Lance said, his hopes getting raised. Maybe Natalie did still have feelings for him after all these years.

"Lance, no girl could deny that you're sweet," said Natalie. "You're probably the sweetest person I know."

"But you don't love me," said Lance, his hopes falling again.

"Lance, you're a really special guy," said Natalie, "but I'm married to Scott now. We can never be a couple again."

"Oh," said Lance feeling even more dissappointed than before, and almost sorry that he had spoken up about the situation at all. "Let's just take this trail," said Lance pointing to the one that would get them back to his barn the fastest.
