Chapter 5

"Beside the sea when the waves broke I drew a heart for you in the sand. In fields where streams turn to rivers I ran to you, you were there."~B*Witched, "To You I Belong"

During the next two weeks Fiona and Isaac fell madly in love. Katie and Taylor did also, but everyone could see that Fiona and Isaac had something special. On the last night that their families would be in Wildwood, Isaac and Fiona walked together on the abandoned beach. They walked so close to the water's edge that their bare toes were sprayed by the ocean.

"I can't believe that this is our last night together," said Fiona.

"Me neither," said Isaac.

"Do you think we'll ever see each other again?"

"I dunno. Things have calmed down with the band. We're hardly ever on the road. And from what you tell me about how small White Oak is, chances that we'll ever go there seem about..."

"Zero," Fiona finished for him. "We're not gonna ever see each other again, are we?"

"It doesn't look like it. But we can always write to each other. And there's the internet," said Isaac.

"It's not the same," cut in Fiona. "I could move to Tulsa when I'm done with high school."

"But what about your dream of going to New York and becomming a writer? I wouldn't let you give that up for me."

"My dream was to meet someone like you."

"You will."

"But what if I don't? What if there's no one else for me? Surely no one I know now will ever compare to you. Isaac, you're the one for me."

"Well maybe since we're never going to see each other again we weren't meant to be. Maybe these two weeks are all God is going to give us, and ten years from now we'll meet people who we'll love even more."

"So you're saying that we shouldn't continue our relationship?" Fiona questioned.

"We can still be friends. If we try to keep going out until you're out of college, it'll be impossible not to meet someone else."

"So we're just friends?"

"I think it's for the best."

"Okay."

"I'll come to see you off tomorrow."

"Okay," said Fiona. She looked at her watch. "It's late. I better be going."

"Can I have one last kiss?"

"Certainly," said Fiona, and they kissed long and hard. When they broke away, Fiona started walking toward the boardwalk. Then she realized that Isaac wasn't following her.

"Are you coming?" she called.

"No. I'm gonna hang around here for awhile."

"And do what?"

"Contemplate."

A smile spread slowly over Fiona's face. "That's what I love so much about you," she said and then turned and walked away.

Isaac sat down in the sand, not caring whether his pants got dirty. It took everything he had to let Fiona go. He had said that they weren't meant to last, but deep down he knew that wasn't true. But for his and Fiona's sakes, he had to pretend that it was.

He turned around and looked at the boardwalk. Maybe subconsciously he thought he'd catch a glimpse of Fiona leaving, but that wasn't why he looked. He looked simply because he had an instinct.

But what he saw surprised him, but at the same time didn't. He saw the outline of a girl with long hair blowing in the wind standing at the railing looking out at the beach. He didn't know how, but he knew it was Fiona. Then as if she sensed him watching her, she turned and ran down the boardwalk.

Isaac was done contemplating, but he wasn't ready to return to the hotel and give the full report to Taylor, and he knew that Taylor would be waiting for the full report. Not knowing what else to do, Isaac picked up a stick and carefully traced a heart in the wet sand. Inside the heart, he wrote F+I. Even though he knew the heart would wash away in a matter of minutes, he felt that it was a permanent sign of he and Fiona's love.

~*~*~

The next day Fiona's family was to leave at noon. The Hansons weren't to leave until later in the afternoon. Taylor and Isaac were helping Fiona and Katie carry their bags to the car. Taylor and Katie had decided to continue their relatinship. After all the bags were in the car, Fiona and Isaac said their final good~bye.

"This is it," said Fiona.

"I guess so," said Isaac. "But we'll write."

"Sure," said Fiona. The truth was that both of them knew that they probably wouldn't write.

"Fiona! We're leaving!" called her mother from the car window.

"Well, bye," she said quietly.

"Bye," answered Isaac.

Fiona sprinted to her car and climbed into the backseat. When Fiona was in, the car pulled away. Then Isaac realized what was happening. Fiona was driving out of his life.

"Fiona!" he screamed and started chasing the car.

"Isaac, stop!" called Taylor and started chasing Isaac. Taylor was a faster runner and caught up to Isaac in a matter of seconds.

"Man, let he go," said Taylor in a comforting tone.

"I don't wanna let her go, Tay!" yelled Isaac. "I told her we weren't meant to be, but that was bull! And now she's out of my life!" Isaac started crying right in the middle of the sidewalk, and he realized the awful truth. He would never see Fiona again.

Or so he thought...
