YES. Although it might not seem like a wise way to do business, it is not that surprising that they did this. It is a lot harder for SNK to convince the retailers to give them shelfspace since their handheld has not proven itself yet. Convincing on-line retailers is of course a lot easier since there is no such thing as shelfspace. Another reason to only sell it on-line might have been to create a certain exclusivity around the NGPC, because poeple can't just buy it everywhere. This way they can create a demand for their product that might not have been there if they sold through normal retailers at first (once the 'hardcore' has it, the mainstream will follow, because they will have seen that the NGPC is superior to it's competitors and has some great games, or so SNK hopes). The consumer only has to take a look at the amount of games for the gameboy on sale and they would easily dismiss the NGPC for it's 'lack' of software. By selling it on-line first, SNK can prove to the retailers that their product can be profitable to them while they build a bigger catalogue of games before they actually start selling them through normal retailers. |
