King of Fighters R-2 -- a review by Deftbizkit311

Back in May I finally decided to order a NGPC with the King Of Fighters-R2, and I never regret that I did. To this day it's my most played game for the marvelous little system, but Metal Slug and Fatal Fury both get their fair share of time in my hands.

Graphics: A+
Screenshots dont really do this game justice. Yes they look good and all, but you must see this game in action. The first thing you'll notice is the great artwork on the opening sequence, which shows some lightly animated hand drawn pics of some of the fighters-all crisp and in stunning color for a portable. Once you start the game you can then see why you have to see the game in action to get the full effect. Every character is superbly animated and I still haven't seen any action that has a missing frame of animation. The only thing that some might complain about is how characters are composed of around 4 colors each, but hey, this is one of the first NGPC games and it still looks amazing.

Sound: B
Well, I dont know much about portable music and sound except that it always sounds like GameBoy. This isn't bad, but I mean who cares that much when the game is this good? The sound effects are pretty nice, I like the metallic ping sound when you are about to do a super move (the screen goes black and your character reaches up as a spark fills their fist-I love it everytime).

Gameplay: A+
Pretty much I think the main thing in fighting games is how well you can pull off moves-with the great control stick on the NGPC pulling off moves is no sweat. Aside from that, the gameplay is amazing, very fast and challenging. There are two modes of the main KOF playing, Team and Single. Single is your standard one fighter quest to get to the boss, and believe me, you'll need to hone your skills sown by the time you get to the last boss Rugal. Team has you edit a team of 3 members and then pits you against other teams, similar to single mode. If you've played KOF before, you'll be able to pick this game up very easily, and if you haven't you will to. It's easy to play but hard to master.

Replay: A++
2 things in this game will keep you coming back for more. First, Making mode. This allows you to choose a character, name him/her, and send them through a RPG-ish quest to gather "Skills". What are these skills you ask? Well, just what they sound like. Some increase you moves power, some raise your health, and some are new moves altogether. Overall it is a very adicting mode of play as there are over 200 skills. Second is the secret characters. There are nine of them, and no one is really sure just how they appear and fight against you. (I think it's just random.) But anyway, while going through team or single mode, if a secret character challenges you, defeat them and then hopefully beat the game. If you do this you just may have a new character in your lineup. These secret characters, although just secret versions of normal characters, posses new looks and new moves, so it's very nice to have them as you can use them anytime to play through in a normal game-even making mode! Should you buy the game?:Yes! This is simply put, a must buy for the NGPC. With the amazing graphics, lightning fast easy to pick up gameplay, and the addition of Making mode, you can't go wrong and will find that this little black cartridge will be in your NGPC for a long time to come.

Overall: A+
