Note from Eclipse: I censored some of the language that appears in this review, mainly so I don't get emails from angry parents. :D (I don't personally mind if someone swears; I just had to keep in mind that all audiences can read this.) I just changed some letters in potentially objectionable words to *. Nothing else has been changed. Don't worry, if don't mind swear words, I kind of think you'll be able to figure out what the censored words are supposed to be. ;)

Samurai Shodown! 2 -- a review by k-spiff

Ok, kind of a surprise no one reviewed this game yet.. this cart is definitely the best I've played yet. If you liked Samurai in the arcade, you will like it on the pocket -- it's just that good.

Grafx: A

The look and animations in this game grab your attention right away, despite the 2-3-color characters. It seems SNK has decided to uphold all the standards which made them famous; though I must admit there are scarcely enough cut scenes and the endings are NES-ish. Parallax scrolling and zooming are absent, though I would guess simply so there are a few features for Samurai 3 =). The only thing vexing about this game are the animal companions.. they disappear when you or your enemy pull a special -- too much to animate at once?-- making them a bit difficult to predict and control. I like how they borrowed the Marvel vs. Capcom-style cut frame for special moves.. there are even off-screen specials (..sort of..) like in Mortal Kombat (..only better).

Sound: B (I couldn't possibly give any handheld above a B)

Really, it works better in this game than any of the others.. Samurai music has always sounded far off and monotonous and the drum beats keep it from getting annoying. About all you'll miss is the digital voice, the area in which GameBoy has the advan.. oh, that's right =)..

Control: A+

Hmm, one might assume this game would control like a Samurai Shodown game; they'd be right.. but that doesn't mean you don't have to read the manual. Samurai pocket may have all the game the original had, but it'll take getting used to with 2 buttons. Oh, and though I hate to pick, isn't it about time we had air blocks and super jumps in all these games? Though I'm glad they released one faithful translation, these are just good features..

Gameplay: A

From the beginning, Samurai Shodown 2 is a half-a**ed translation of one of the best 2D arcade fighters ever. Once you manage to collect all 112 character cards, however, it becomes a nearly perfect translation and possibly the baddest a** on the planet =).

Praise? This is perfect Samurai, with all the moves.. if you've done it before, you can do it here.. only smaller (though it's no less brilliant).

My one complaint? Not enough modes.. no practice, only story, survival, and versus. Considering this is one of my first Neo games and how hard the controller is to get used to, a practice mode would've been very nice..

Overall: A

If you want a fighting game that will make you throw out your GameBoy, sell your soul to Satan, etc. this is it. If you have a NGPC and lack this game you are seriously f***ed up.. unless you at least have KOF.. then you're just misguided; can you see where I'm going with this here?
