Mid-Victorians sentimentalized the ritual of mourning and openly accepted death, spiritualism
and the after-life as part of their daily routine. As funerals and mourning became more sentimentalized and ritualized, there became a need for advice books and etiquette manuals to teach the bereaved the proper and respectful way to mourn the passing of a loved one.
