Season 6

6x08 How the Ghosts Stole Christmas

On Christmas Eve, Mulder has somehow convinced Scully to meet him in front of a claimed haunted house. He tells her the story of the two star-crossed lovers, who on every Christmas, drive couples to suicide. He wants her to go in with him but she says she has to wrap gifts. Mulder says ok(yeah right:)) and goes in the house. Scully talks to herself while searching in her pocket for her car keys. She says that it will be her New Year's resolution not to follow him. She can't find her car keys and goes in to ask Mulder if he's seen them. He, of course, says no(Can you guess who took them?). The doors suddenly close and they discover they're locked in. Mulder claims it is the ghosts but the ever skeptical Scully says people might be living there. When a door that was locked opens and a light shines through, Scully admits that she's scared. Of course, it's an irrational fear. Mulder and Scully go in the door that leads to a library. They look around and under some floorboards, there are two bodies. Scully comments that they're wearing the same outfits as them. They realize that the bodies are them. Now even more scared they try to find a way out, only to get seperated, each ending up in a room that looks exactly like the library. The ghosts(played by Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin) have devised a plan to get the two agents to kill each other. Mulder meets with Maurice first. He confronts him about taking Scully's keys. He trys to convince Mulder that he is lonely and is better off dead. Meanwhile, Scully meets Lydia and she starts to freak out. She actually screams when she first sees her. Then she goes hystrical asking Lydia why the furniture is covered. Scully keeps her gun on the ghost when Maurice comes in. Scully tells them both to put their hands up. When Lydia does so, she reveals a large hole in her stomach area. Scully, in daze, takes off Maurice's hat and finds a hole in his head. She can see right through both holes. Scully then passes out. Lydia leaves and talks to Mulder, who is on a chair trying to find a way out. Mulder asks about Scully. Meanwhile, Scully awakes. She sees Maurice and demands to know where Mulder is. He says it isn't good to go see him because he's seen guys like this and says Mulder will shoot her. Scully doesn't believe him and Maurice allows Mulder in. He starts to shoot at her, saying that one of them has to do it. Scully is shot and then we see that it was Lydia as Mulder who shot her. Mulder once again asks where Scully is and Maurice tells him that Scully will shoot him. Mulder doesn't believe him and Maurice allows him into the room. Mulder sees Scully on the floor and thinks that she shot herself. When he leans down to her, she shoots him. But once again, it was Lydia, this time as Scully. Mulder and Scully make their way to the front door, dragging themselves on the floor. They meet up with each other and draw their guns on each other, arguing who shot who. Scully asks if Mulder is afraid and says that she is. Mulder realizes that it's all in their minds and tells Scully to get up. She at first doesn't understand but then follows Mulder out the door, where their wounds mysteriosly disappear. The ghosts discuss losing their victims and decide to try again next year. Back home, Scully knocks on Mulder's door and asks him, trying to reasure herself, if that was all really in their heads. Mulder says that it must have been. Then, Mulder and Scully, who had decided not to, exchange gifts. Episode Name Meaning: After the Dr. Seuss story titled, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' Aired: 12/13/98
