BRIEF HISTORY REVIEW

The people that established in this Department descends from the CHANCAS (pre-inca culture). According to the legend, from the Choclococha lake, three men came out to divide the world into 3 regions. As they left the lake the Huancas became a dog, the Pocras into a Hawk and the Chancas in a Puma. The fearful Chancas distinguished because their bellicose and hardened spirit. There is a hypothesis, that they were the responsible of the disintegration of the Wari culture.

The Chanca’s had several Ayllus divided in two: Hanan and Hurin. After bloody battles they were defeated but never subdue, by the  Inca Pachacutec in 1438.

During, the conquest, the Spaniards, negotiated alliances with the people who were subdue by the Incas, in exchange of their freedom. The Chancas took revenge on the Incas in becoming part of the troops that participated in the attack of Cusco and in the extermination of the Imperial Nobility.
