SURROUNDINGS TO THE CITY
SAIHUITE At
45 kms. from Abancay, is this archeological site. The principal
monument is a giant monolith of 4 mts. of diameter, that represents in
scale the map of the Tahuantinsuyo. Its known as the Saihuite Rock, a
litic sculpture, that has drawings in relief of the flora, fauna,
topography and habits of the Incas. The rock shows an esplanade and two
stairways that go up to a temple. Behind this center, was found
this rock walls that enclosed a group of 12 rooms (3 mts. long and 3 mts.
wide). Also has a stairway that goes to a patio with a fountain. Here
you can see a row of fountains and aqueducts, similar to the ones in
Machu Picchu. It has a beautiful trapezoidal door, with fine carved rock
in perfect preservation. AMPAY
NATIONAL SANCTUARY
This
national sanctuary protects the largest forest of intimpa trees in
Peru's highlands. It covers an area of 3,635 hectares. The intimpa is
Peru's only native conifer species, and the dense forest shelters many
species of wildlife, mostly birds. Also has a series of glacial lakes
that its waters are flowing down from the snow-capped peak of
Mount Ampay, which dominates the region and gives the name to this
protected area.
The
sanctuary is reached from Tamburco, located northwest of the city
of Abancay. PACHUCA
LAKE At 17 kms. from Andahuaylas. Ideal for fishing, camping and boat
rides. SONDOR
SITE Old rock building, that belonged to the Chanca culture, located 20
minutes from the town of Pacucha, in Andahuaylas. CHOQUEKIRAW
Located in the province of La Convención. A pre-inca city, with a shape of
trapezoidal construction that looks like a military quarters. The new
tourist destiny in Perú. ANTABAMBA At 3,636 mts.,
is an archeological site with a beautiful rock temple with
funeral caves. RIO
COTARUSE Close to the town of Cotaruse, province of Aymaraes, is located
the longest and best conserved hanging bridge of the Royal Inca Trail of
Peru.
