GPS Navigation Systems
GPS devices have been around for decades, but until recently have not been
readily adopted by consumers for use in car navigation.
Today's GPS navigation systems are simply amazing -- the road maps of the entire
US come pre-installed and are displayed in beautiful
3D so it's more representative of your actual drive. Voice directions are
provided to the driver during the entire route, some
devices even offer real-time road condition updates to help identify and find
alternatives to traffic or accidents. Many of these devices
even offer points of interest so you can find stores and tourist attractions
anywhere you drive. My point is, these devices are
finally affordable and useful enough that they have sky-rocketed in
popularity and have been on many Christmas wish-lists
this past year.

My TomTom One 3rd Edition and it's modification and Apps I have added a custom menu so that I can have "Itinerary Planning", then added "MenuTT" application to switch between the custom menu and the original menu. Added "Tripmaster" application so that I can have altitude information, speed warning, and an actual compass. Created my own day and night screens. Added a simple "Calculator" application so I don't have to pull out my cell phone for when I am out on a cross country trek. For "Itinerary Planning", I use "Tyre" (Trace Your Route Everywhere). I found that using "Google Earth" and creating a "kml" file is easier than using the "Google Maps" function included with "Tyre". I just open the "kml" file in Tyre then save it as an "itn" file and copy it to the "itn" folder on the TomTom unit. This is mainly because I have Dial-up and Google Earth is faster than Google Maps. Go figure. I certainly want to give credit to those that have taken the time to create these capabilities. I like my TomTom much more because of them. I only wish that "Offroad Navigator" from webazar worked for the 3rd Edition, but then again, I do have my Magellan eXplorist 210 for that (thanks to my spouse)(see My GPS Page 1).
