Robert W. Chambers
(1865-1933)
Robert W. Chambers is one of the most important writers of the Edwardian era. Born in Brooklyn, he studied art in New York and Paris. Later, he became an illustrator for magazines such as Life, Truth, and Vogue, but soon turned his talents to writing. His principal early works were of the horror genre, and are often hailed as classics. Then he tackled a series of historical novels, which were well-received and popular among young people. His fiction of the Edwardian period deals largely with the problems of social life. The Fighting Chance (1906) and Danger Mark (1909) explore alcoholism, while The Younger Set (1907) and Firing Line (1908) deal with divorce. In Search of the Unknown (1904) is a slow-paced novel concerning cryptozoology. Chambers adapted his fiction to the popular demand, and thus his work is of great interest to students of American cultural history. Many of his books were made into successful feature films. Chambers wrote from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M., and nobody ( not even his family) knew where his New York office was located. He was an avid collector of Oriental curios, old armor, and antique furniture. A full evaluation of his life and work is in slow progress.
