E. Phillips Oppenheim
(1866-1946)
Edward Phillips Oppenheim was a highly prolific author of mystery and espionage thrillers. He was born in England, son of a prosperous leather merchant. He worked at his father's firm during the day, and wrote steadily at night. His father, who was something of a literary man, helped Oppenheim revise and publish his first novel. With the publication of his novel The Mysterious Mr. Sabin (1898) his success was secured, and thence followed a large number of colorful and intriguing tales. His works were highly successful in the United States, and among all his books only twelve remained unpublished in America. One of Oppenheim's pastimes was to frequent the cafes and restaurants of London, and study the different types of human character. His fellow-writers often wondered when he wrote, for he was never seen at work. He used to spend long hours golfing. His tales are fast-paced, and written in a plain literary style.
