The PROBLEM - s

1982
In 1982 -Council commissioned the first ever Master Plan to investigate the introduction of the F28 Jet services to the Airport  - It gave the Council 2 options;
Council SAVED 1/2M$ and chose Option 1 and have been choosing the Cheap Option ever since.
Now, 23 years later, it's going to cost more than 200 times that amount to FIX this problem.
Numerous Master Plans were commissioned (at great Ratepayers expense) to find a Solution but Every Master Plan including 2006 still recommended the East-West Runway for the Long Term, and Council is STILL thinking of saving money in the SHORT TERM.
But the SHORT Term solution introduces Extra Problems regarding SAFETY and NOISE Pollution for North Marcoola and it still wouldn't SOLVE the Real Problem because the Runway (at 35m) would STILL be too Narrow.

ALSO;
By constructing the E/W Runways recommended in the Previous Master Plans (13/31 or 14/42 ) the NOISE Problem is simply transferred from North Marcoola to South Marcoola- which is UNACCEPTABLE.

ALSO;
By MOVING the Airport to Caloundra or Somewhere Else would also transfer the Noise to Somebody Else -
Which is Also UNACCEPTABLE.
Besides the COST would be ASTRONOMICAL. And all the Existing Established Aeronautical Industries would NOT want to move.

The SOLUTION

AIRWIZ has come up with the IDEAL SOLUTION
By RELOCATING the East-West Runway slightly to the North and changing the Orientation to run 110-290 DEGREES  (i.e. RWY.11/29) we can build a 45m wide x 2450m long Runway which doesn't pass over ANY Residential Areas and is even Better Situated to suit the Prevailing Winds.
Nothing but Swamp Land and Cane Farms to the West - And since the Sugar Industry has been DEVASTATED by the decision of the Foreign Owners to CLOSE the Morton Mill and the Ex-Cane Farmers to the West would be only too willing to sell out to the Maroochy Council.
And there's NOBODY living on the Eastern End and the approach is wholly over the Sea.
This is as close to the Ideal Situation as you can get.

It's STILL more expensive than the Short-Term Solution preferred by Council but we can't do anything about that now -
They should have thought about THAT back in 1982.
Let's hope they won't be saying THIS about 2006 in a few years time.      The ONLY obstacle might be that someone discovers some rare endangered Bog-Frog habitat in the Peat Swamp, like they did on RWY.14/42 with the Swamp Casurena.

The TIME TABLE
Time is OF THE ESSENCE
Council needs to ACT NOW and not wait till some Developer decides to build a Casino on the last remaining Beach Front Allotments on the entire Sunshine Coast.
They missed the window of opportunity 23 years ago.   Will they do it AGAIN?
It's now October of 2006 and these blocks have already been earmarked for Resort or Casino Development. - If Council procrastinates for too long ANY chance for a E/W Solution will be lost.

NOVEMBER 2006 UPDATE
The Casino Deal has fallen through and the Site is again "Up For Grabs" - Will Council let this LAST Chance to acquire the land for the Runway End Safety Zone of RWY.11/29 slip through their fingers. - If so we can kiss goodbye to any chance of a Safe East-West Runway for the Sunshine Coast Airport  either now or ANYTIME IN THE FUTURE.

Will Council MISS the Boat - AGAIN?

Will they wait till THIS
And they will have LOST the LAST
turns into THIS?
HOPE for a SAFE E/W Runway FOREVER?

TIME is RUNNING OUT!

The cost is INCREASING exponentially;
In 1982 the WHOLE Project would have cost $10.3Million.
In 2004 the cost of THIS Parcel of Land alone was $2Million.
NOW in 2006 the cost of THIS Land has blown out to $15Million
(In 1982 they could have built TWO Airports for the cost of this single vacant block)
So - What will it cost in 15 years time?
What will be the Price when Council eventually decides to ACT?
Will they EVER Act, or will they stick to the easy option and Upgrade The EXISTING N/S Runway again?

TOO LATE - The SEPTEMBER 2007 DECISION
Maroochy Council have voted on the 2006 Master Plan
The RESULT
CLICK for the NEWS CLIP
The DECISION
The GOOD NEWS is - They are NOT planning to Extend the Existing N/S Runway 18/36
The BAD NEWS is -  It won't be built for another 15 Years and;
It's the 13/31 Version which means Aircraft will still fly over Houses instead
of the 11/29 Version which was OUR Preference which DIDN'T overfly ANY Houses
But Hey! - 15 Years is a L O N G  Time  - That's another 2 Master Plans away (1 every 7 years)
We will have had 4 changes in Administration by then.  Different Politicians will be in power.
The present Bureaucrats will all be retired and replaced by the present Junior Staff
or new recruits who won't remember this decision - or - won't feel obliged to be bound by it.
AND
The COST will have EXPLODED by a factor of X10 or X20 times the Present - Hell! -  Council can't afford the Present Cost even NOW  (Take a look at Past History)
The ONLY way we will ever get an East/West Runway will be if the Other Sunshine Coast Councils help PAY the COST!  - And they have already REFUSED to do this;
SO - The ONLY way it will EVER Happen is;
The State Government SUCCEEDS in forcing the different Councils to AMALGAMATE and, they COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION IMMEDIATELY!

And why have they adopted the 13/31 location instead of our 11/29?
The reason given is that  the 11/29 location infringes upon a newly created NATIONAL PARK.
This is the SAME area that caught fire back in December 1991.
It was and still is - nothing but a Peat Swamp.  That's why it caught fire in the first place.
And it burned and smouldered underground for weeks afterwards.
the 1991 SWAMP FIRE
Does THIS sound like the kind of Area that should be preserved for future generations by being declared a National Park?     NOTHING even lives there except a few flea-bitten wallabies.
But some know-it-all bureaucrat in his high-rise office in Brisbane has decided it IS.
And so the E/W Runway must be located to overfly existing residental areas rather than disturb said wallabies (if they even exist).
