The DECISION
The GOOD NEWS is - They are NOT planning to Extend the Existing N/S Runway 18/36
The BAD NEWS is -  It won't be built for another 15 Years and;
It's the 13/31 Version which means Aircraft will still fly over Houses instead
of the 11/29 Version which was OUR Preference which DIDN'T overfly ANY Houses
So WHY was the 13/31 Location chosen instead of the 11/29 one?   CLICK HERE

HISTORY
How did this BUSY AIRPORT come to be built right in the middle of a RESIDENTIAL AREA?
Who was here FIRST ?
(The Chicken or the Egg Question )
Who's fault is it that we now have a NOISE PROBLEM ?
Why is the Airport now LANDLOCKED and unable to expand any further ?

Here it is, the RED DOT on the map
The Sunshine Coast Airport services the
Shires of; Noosa, Maroochy and Caloundra
They ALL share in its BENEFITS, but only
Maroochy PAYS FOR IT.
And the residents of North Marcoola bear
the brunt of its constantly increasing
NOISE POLLUTION

Airport Master Plan 1999 Edition

The Penultimate (Number 22) of never ending series of Master Plans again advocates the construction of an EAST/WEST Runway.
The ONLY difference from past reports is the Statistics gathered on the effects of NOISE on the Local Residents.
They claim that......
"Airport Noise does NOT seem to be a PROBLEM for the local population"

Singapore Flying College

An Unwanted Christmas Present in 2001 for Marcoola Residents compliments of Aeromil's Steve Padgett was his deal with Singapore Airlines to turn MARCOOLA into The AVIATION TRAINING HUB OF SOUTH EAST ASIA.

New LOCAL LAW

The New LOCAL LAW governing the Sunshine Coast Airport empowers the Council with new EXTRAORDINARY POWERS to enforce penalties and ensure its Airport Police against prosecution, but does NOT include any Restrictions or Curfews to PROTECT Local Residents.

The CURFEW

The Council and Airport Management don't want a CURFEW.
They want to bring in more business at night and allow earlier take-offs.
They could stop operations NOW between 10pm and 7am, but they are trying to introduce Early Morning takeoffs from 5.30am. - And they WILL if we let them (By remaining SILENT)

SAFETY (Or LACK OF IT)

The Hazard of living on the Flight Path was down-played at the Meeting and we were quoted more STATISTICS like 1:1,000,000chance of injury to residents from airport related incidents.
The VERY NEXT DAY one of our neighbours was almost struck as a light aircraft made a forced landing on the beach where she was sunbathing.

A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
or a FINAL SOLUTION 2006 (Click HERE)

If Council still wishes to proceed with a STAGED DEVELOPMENT as recommended in this latest Master Plan, perhaps the following suggestion may satisfy most peoples immediate problems;

The existing East/West Runway could be UPGRADED to share most of the RPT traffic up to the size of Sunstates Shorts.

It could also be provided with Landing Lights so that the Flying Schools could use it for Night Flying Exercises, which is presently the NUMBER ONE annoyance for Marcoola residents.
This would be a relatively inexpensive solution to most of our present problems.

The New SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL
With the forced amalgamation of; Maroochy, Noosa and Caloundra Councils into The SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL one would hope that with their combined resources they could at last make a start on correcting this 1984 mistake and commence work on the long overdue East/West Runway, but once again all we are hearing are excuses about how it is too expensive and how they will have to flog-off half the Airport to Private Enterprise. What hope will the Local Residents have when THAT happens?

S.C.Daily Headline 21/4/08

Based on the Cost Increase over the last 24 years (1984=$10.3M to 2008=$250M) we can guestimate the cost when Council and its Private Enterprise Partner are planning to commence construction, sometime in the year 2020 to be around $600BILLION.
Hey! Guess what the EXCUSE for NOT building an E/W Runway will be THEN?
