JC's Revenge - Action E.P.

The myspace site of Cheltenham four-piece JC's Revenge proudly declares: "We have no silly haircuts (well not by choice), and don't wear tight jeans and makeup, but people seem to like us anyway."

Well, they should do. Their newly-released Action EP, which luckily for everyone else they are giving away free, displays a band basking in an impressive flexibility, borne from a lack of thought for fashions or expectations. Thrashing wildly between the fuzzy power-pop of the title track, which bursts forth from grungy verses into a fist-punching guitar hook, to the aspirational This Year and its nursery-rhyme picking, JCR's sound recalls early Feeder, but the ramped up quiet-loud dynamics give these songs an extra edge. Singer Mike's voice is pitched roughly halfway between Grant Nicholas and Mark 'E' Everett of Eels, and it suits them well.

Sure, they could be accused of relying a little too much on All My Life-style chugging power chords, and This Year's beautiful intro is a little too similar to that of Athlete's I Love, but essentially this is a band of great promise. They're playing live at The Frog & Fiddle, Cheltenham, on Saturday 25th, with two other bands – go check 'em out.
