Space Newspaper

Rich Partington has recently started at the University of Gloucestershire, and is a music Journalist for the student paper Space.
In this short interview, Rich explains more about himself, Space newspaper and what bands need to do to be involved.

Firstly, a little information about yourself?
I’m 18, originally from Cornwall, currently doing a degree in Print Journalism at the University of Gloucestershire. I have previously written for Cornish Live Gig Review and written press releases for my own band The Frenzy, for which I am singer, guitarist, songwriter, and lyricist! I also work as a sports journalist for the Uni’s online radio station, Tone Radio. My favourite artists include Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Pixies, AFI, System Of A Down, and The Crimea, but I love music of all styles and genres. My other interests include football, reading and socialising.

Tell us About Space
Space is a free newspaper produced by the University of Gloucestershire Student’s Union, and so in essence is independent from the Uni itself. It comes out every two or three weeks, and copies are easily available in every campus, at Pitville, Park, FCH, and Oxstalls (in Gloucester), usually outside the SU bars. It is read widely by a large number of students. As well as music it has news, comment from SU figures, Film, Gaming and Sports sections.

What can we expect from the music pages?
Gig reviews, album reviews, band profiles and interviews. Hopefully a local gig guide and features on upcoming events. I would like to enable students to find the best local music and provide local talent which deserved exposure. There are currently three journalists who are specifically dedicated to music coverage.

Are you featuring local or national bands or both?
Definitely both. As with all other aspects of the paper, the music section is largely focussed on things which will affect and be attractive to students, and for me this includes everything from big bands coming to big venues in places like Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham, to a singer/songwriter playing the open mic night at The Frog And Fiddle.

Who’s been featured so far?
The most recent issue, the first I’ve worked on, featured my review of Cheltenham-based rock band Days Unknown’s acoustic set at the Parrot, as well as a review of Beck’s “The Information” album, and a review of the Fresher’s week Band Night at the Park Campus, which featured local artists Chief Pinkton, Ben Lee Tyler and Century Man. The next issue should include reviews of, My Chemical Romance’s new album, Frank Turner’s gig at the Nightowl and an exclusive interview with the Delays.

What do bands need to do to get in contact, and what sort of stuff are you looking to get from them?
I would like info on upcoming gigs, single, EP, and album launches. The best thing to do would be to send me a message on www.myspace.com/richthejournalist. If they don’t have myspace email me at thedevonportroar@aol.com. I would also like CDs to review – demos any time, and, if an official release, in advance, with information on any record release party.
