Nightlife

What goes on at night in Brit-Wales? Sleeping, but what else? Do they go out and see what else is there to life? Do they own night? Or do they just let it slip by unnoticed until morning to wake up and carry on with their lives? It is all of these and at the same time none.

Clyde wandered the streets of her neighborhood, looking at the sky. She couldn’t see that night. Nick and Kay slept in for the night. Nick had to get up early in the morning to work. Too bad he didn’t go out at night to party. The old biddy smirked to herself.

Oh my Nick, she thought. Clyde paused and giggled. He is such a beautiful man. She didn’t care if he was married or not. Kay really didn’t react to the old biddy hitting on her husband, much to Nick’s dismay. Tucker was kind of cute too, but not like Nick. Clyde laughed to herself aloud.

“I love Nick Grey so much!!!” she yelled to the sky. Her loud laughter followed behind after that.

Tucker wiped down the last counter for the night. He paused and breathed. Done!, he thought. The man took another look around the Sunny Plum. This was what his life led him to. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that great either. Yet, he didn’t feel like moving up. Tucker reached his limit.

“Tucker!” he heard someone yell. The man quickly looked up from his thoughts. Annie stood in the kitchen doorway. Her husband sighed aloud.

“Yes, dear?” he asked. She looked around the café.

“Is everything cleaned and put away?” Annie asked.

“Yes, yes,” Tucker replied. His wife didn’t speak at first. She walked into the café and began her inspection. Her husband rolled his eyes.

“Why must you do all of that?” he asked.

“I don’t trust your work,” she said.

“Why not?”

“You do a poor job at this!”

“I do not!”

“Yes, you do.” Annie paused when something caught her eye. She ran her fat finger along the window sill. The woman rubbed her thumb and index finger together.

“What is this?” she asked. Tucker rolled his eyes at her.

“Dust,” he mumbled.

“Uh-huh,” she said. She walked over to him and showed him the dust.

“Did you get the window sill?” his wife asked.

“Yes,” her husband lied. Annie frowned and blew it into his face. Tucker fanned it away as fast as he could.

“What the hell, woman?!?” he barked. Annie frowned at him.

“It’s not clean because you didn’t mucked it up!” she yelled. “Do a better job this time!” She walked upstairs to the flat that she shared with her husband. Tucker rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he mumbled. She’s just evil at times.

Muriel took a hot cup of tea to bed with her. Helped to ease her to sleep at night. The old woman closed her eyes and took in the smell. A warm chill ran up her spine. She felt her mind relax away from all the business of the day. A smile came on her face. The old biddy giggled to herself.

That was a fun afternoon, she thought. She took a sip of the tea. Muriel shivered happily.

“Mmm,” she murmured. “So good!” The old lady opened her eyes. She laid down on her bed and breathed in the summer air. She already had an idea of what her friends were doing at this hour. Clyde would be wandering around the streets at night. Lewis would be wrapping up with her farm work. Pauline would have settled to a good book right now. William and his girls would already be asleep. And her own kids…

Muriel always fell asleep when she got to her own children.

Clyde walked along the high stone wall just miles from Lewis’ farm. The old biddy smiled to herself.

Night farm, she thought. Night Lewis! Clyde lied down on the wall and looked up at the sky. The stars danced around on her dirty face. She thought about Nick again. Okay, so he wasn’t a beautiful man. Clyde just didn’t care.

“I love ‘im!” she yelled. “I love ‘im! I love ‘im! I love ‘im!” The old biddy giggled to herself. She pulled out a cigarette from her jacket and placed it in her mouth. The old biddy could only find one match in there as well. Clyde blinked at her discovery.

“What the…” she mumbled. “I thought me ‘ad more!" She sighed aloud. “Bollocks,” she mumbled. Guess she had to make do with what she had at the moment. Such a pain. Oh well. She struck the match and lit up. Clyde took in a long smoke. A slow smile came across her face.

“Now, this is ‘eaven!” she yelled. But, what about tomorrow? The sun’s going to be up in a few minutes. Clyde just shrugged it off. She’s just going to go to sleep right then and there, just like she normally does. To hell with the others. Clyde snickered to herself again. Looks like it’s another sleep in morning for her.

“Maybe I’ll get to see Nick in the afternoon and give him a great big kiss,” she mumbled as she drew her eyes closed. The cigarette drooped and fell out of her mouth, falling to the dark lake below.
