The Favorite Things About Poetry Inc, Poetry@Work
Ode to the soil of the Americas
From Mexico, Central America
The West Indies, Southern and Central California
You can find avocado orchards all over
And thousands of consumers enjoying
This tasty fruit, a star among many others
Part butter, banana and lettuce
An avocado is good for the whole party
For sure, an avocado is a vegetable all over the Americas
While the varieties -Fuerte, Zutano, Reed, Bacon
May be different; what one does with an avocado
Is something different
Many consumers are used to eating the ripe, purple-black
Skin Hass instead of the green-skinned avocados
What’s constant among all the varieties is the ripeness test
Squeeze the fruit in the palm of your hand
Examine its nice shape to spot any blemish, if any
If it’s still firm, it’s not ripe yet
The ripeness of an avocado is not similar to the ripeness
Of Asian pears which don’t yield to pressure
The Hass accepts all types of pressure from shoppers
Standing in the middle of the a large avocado orchard
I fall in love with the beauty of the fruits
Hanging from the branches covered by green leaves
The can stay on the trees for over 7 months
Harvested, they go to the supermarkets
To adorn the shelves and lure the customers
Who can resist its creamy texture, fibers and buttery flavors?
Unlike bananas, they welcome your test
Never get tired of pressing them to check their ripeness.
If it’s a Hass, it will go from green to dark-green
Then to purple-black to show ripeness
It’s time to prepare the huge bowl of dip
For any occasions such as a casual get-together
A communion, open house, after-work party,
Company and family potluck
As an appetizer and starter
Cut the avocado open, remove the oily fiber
To make the guacamole or any other dish
To the mashed avocados, you will add
Garlic, tomatoes, onions, lemon juice, salt
And Chile Peppers
Holy Guacamole, how delicious!
Yet moderation must prevail
Just like in all areas of consumption
Enjoy an avocado for your heart and vision
The monounsaturated oil helps combat
Cancer, diabetes, obesity and more
Avocado’s the king
Holy guacamole!
