Switches
Lord, the flies were thick that year,
swarming the front porch,
taking the screen door hostage.
We thought the fruit bats would take
care of the excess,
and we'd listen for their sonar
squeaks and whistles
through the static of the AM
station and the asthmatic wheeze
of a July head cold passed
from cousin to cousin but
it never happened - the bats
kept their secure distance and
returned to their caves without supper.
Ode To An Intellectual
The next time I fall into fondness,
Let it be for a flannel-clad redneck
Whose highlight is darts every Thursday
