The National Poetry Contest had come down to 2 semi-finalists:
A Yale graduate, and a High School Student from Newfoundlander. They were given a single word, and then allowed two minutes to compose an original poem that contained the word.
The word they were given was "TIMBUKTU".
First to recite his poem was the Yale graduate. He boldly stepped up to the microphone, and said:
"SLOWLY ACROSS THE DESERT SAND,
TREKKED A LONELY CARAVAN.
MEN ON CAMELS, TWO BY TWO,
DESTINATION - TIMBUKTU."
The crowd went crazy! No way the Newfoundlander could top that, they thought.
The Newfoundlander calmly made his way to the microphone, and in a strong voice recited:
" ME AND TIM A HUNTIN' WENT,
MET THREE WHORES IN A POP-UP TENT.
THEY WAS THREE, AND WE WAS TWO,
SO I BUCKED ONE, AND TIMBUKTU."
The Newfie won - HANDS DOWN!
The author of this piece is unknown to me, but I love poetry, and I have a sense of humour. So I put it here, for all to enjoy.
