April Salzano
My
Middle Name is Dawn
or maybe the curse from my mother,
to wake before the sun, to greet morning
as I travel the length of light in search
of a peace I know does not exist. Sunrise
is an illusion that illuminates nothing
except the hardscrabble landscape, splits
my name equally between time and event.
From Age This Appreciation
of unmapped mornings, stolen seconds
of silence that hold immeasurable value.
Trees dancing with wind, rain patterning
on window. How a spider’s web holds diamonds
from the garden hose, the particular shade
of marigolds. The contrast of small
things against mass of so much more.
April Salzano teaches writing in Pennsylvania. She is currently
working on two poetry collections and a memoir on raising a child
with autism. Her work has appeared in The Camel Saloon, Writing
Tomorrow and Rattle. She is co-editor at Kind of a Hurricane Press
and was recently nominated for two Pushcart awards.
