Members
of the entertainment industry joined forces for a two-hour TV Special,
"America: A Tribute To Heroes". The commercial-free telethon was
aired live on September 21, 2001. The four major US networks - ABC, CBS,
Fox and NBC - broadcasted the show and also very generously bear the costs
for the program.
Pledges were taken during the telethon to raise funds
for the thousands of people who suffered losses as a result of the tragic
events on September 11 in America.
The telethon featured appearances and performances by
the following entertainers, among others: Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, U2,
Bon Jovi, Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Sheryl Crow, Tom Cruise, Cameron
Diaz, The Dixie Chicks, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Faith
Hill, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Conan O'Brien, Tom Petty, Ray Romano, Julia
Roberts, Paul Simon, Will Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Sela Ward, Whoopi
Goldberg, Robin Williams, Steve Wonder, Neil Young, Brad Pitt, Sting...
All performers donated their time.
Celine sang "God Bless America". Her performance was AMAZING,
considered by many as the best of the concert.
The telethon brought in $150 million in pledges.
