In 1902, Dr. Guy Potter Benton, President of Miami University, helped a group of young
women interested in forming a sorority. Himself a member of Phi Delta Theta
Fraternity, Dr. Benton assisted Alfa Lloyd, Anne Simmons, Anna Keen, Mary Collins, Mabelle
Minton, and Julia Bishop in forming a sisterhood that has survived for 100
years. On October 24, 1902, the Department of State of Ohio issued
articles of incorporation to Delta Zeta Sorority.
Our Founders
(Julia Bishop, Anne
Simmons, Mary Collins, Mabelle Minton, Anna Keen, and Alfa Lloyd.)
Today, Delta Zeta is one of the largest sororities in the world, with 165 college
chapters and 250 alumni chapters in the United States, Canada, and the United
Kingdom.
Epsilon Theta was founded at Clarion University on May 15, 1930 as local
sorority Delta Sigma Epsilon, making us the oldest sorority
on campus. We have a strong tradition of sisterhood, friendship, academics, and
having fun. Sixteen sisters live in our sorority house each semester, and all
members are welcome anytime. We hold many activities at our house, from bid
parties to sister activities to movie nights to cookouts.
As of the Spring 2002 semester, Delta Zeta was the largest sorority at
Clarion, with 58 total members. We had a great semester, welcoming 12 new
members. We held a Valentine's Day Date Party along with out annual Spring
Formal. Much of the semester was spent practicing for Greek Week...and we did
awesome! First place in Rope Pull and Swim; second place in Academic Bowl and
Formal Sing ("More Than Words" by Extreme); and third place in
Volleyball and Informal Sing ("I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany).
We're now getting ready for the Fall 2002 semester and DZ's 100th birthday on
October 24, 2002!
