Jean Valjean

1768 – 1833

The hero of the story and I think he’s great! (An opinion confirmed after watching Liam Neeson in the movie – he makes you want to just go and give him a big hug! Watch him practice his alphabet and you’ll see what I mean!) My favourite Valjean has to be the original and wonderful – Colm Wilkinson. I have to admit that some of his lines do make me laugh (“My God Cosette, I heard a cry in the dark, etc” in the TAC) but he shows Valjean’s inner struggles superbly.

Best Scene ~ On the barricade where he lets Javert go. How good can a guy get?

Best Line(s) ~ “Now her mother is with God, Fantine’s suffering is over. And I speak here with her voice, and I stand here in her place.” – one of the few bits that I can actually listen to Gary Morris singing!

Best Song ~ “Bring Him Home”, no matter who’s singing it, it’s almost impossible to muck up this song!
