Scotland Rugby League

2002 Champions - Edinburgh Eagles
It has been an exciting year for Rugby League
in Scotland. Not only have we had another successful Summer Conference
Competition, with Edinburgh Eagles defeating Portobello Playboys 46-24 in the Final
in July, but we have had a couple of ground breaking events heralding new
dawns for the great game North of the Border.
On the eve of the Challenge Cup Final,
Edinburgh Eagles and Teesside Steelers battled it out for the 'Inaugural
Champion of Champions Challenge', a match which brought together the
respective champions of the Conferences. The Steelers claimed a hard
earned win 30-20. It is hoped that both Ireland and Wales will become
involved in the future.
The Eagles reached their fourth successive
final with an impressive 58-6 victory over Division 2 winners Fife Lions.
The Playboys and the Lions were undefeated in their respective group stages.
Dumbarton Dragons opened their account with a win over last season's losing
finalists, Glasgow Bulls, but the Bulls got their revenge when they finally
opened their account 4 weeks into the season.
The Lions were outright winners in Division 2,
beating Clyde 40-0, Borders 44-20 and the luckless Lanarkshire Storm 66-16 &
72-46. Clyde broke their duck by handed out a 72-46 lesson at home
against Storm.
The Eagles and the Bulls received invites to
represent Scotland in the York Golden Jubilee Nines in June, organised by former
London Broncos supremo, Lionel Hurst. Both teams gave good accounts of
themselves, despite being unable to progress to the knock-out stages,
however the Eagles lost out in the group stages to
eventual finalists London Koogas and top French outfit, Lezignan.
"I can smell Bull in the
stand" comments fluffy character to Eagles trio!!
The Scotland Amateurs have been competing in
the Inaugural Four Nations Championship under the watchful eye of Scotland
RL Development Officer, Mark Senter. The Scots finished in fourth
place, losing at home to
Wales (22-40) and England (08-58), whilst the trip to Ireland gave the Scots
their heaviest defeat of the campaign, losing 10-72.
The Students had another successful season, returning from
Italy, having won the Three Nations Cup in Padova. Full credit goes to
Student Coach, Kevin Rudd and his staff for putting the Scots in the top 5
in the World.
