AMATEUR RUGBY LEAGUE FIVE NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

IRELAND  70 - 12  SCOTLAND

Played at Malone RFC, Belfast, 18th August, 2pm.

Scotland received the wooden spoon in Belfast as they were overpowered by
the far more experienced and physical impressive Irish.  Player-coach Brett Maron led by example scoring a hat-trick, his first coming in just 3 minutes when he jibed in under the posts having wrong-footed the whole defence. Ireland rampaged 16-0 ahead in just 9 minutes as Phil Coles and Maron scored again.  Prop Riky Hartas provided the opening for Coles and was influential all day - his experience and power opening up gaps in the Scottish defence. In the 24th minute Hartas touched down himself as he was on the shoulder of Eugene McEntaggart¹s as the Dublin Blue took off from his own half. Just before half-time Scotland had a slight revival as prop Alex Sloane and captain Steve Bissett touched down - veterans Andy Borthwick and Barry Edgar being influential in both plays. Half-time 28-8 Ireland began the second half in barnstorming style - Bob Baggott breaking through the Scottish line out on the wing.  Shortly thereafter 2nd rower Dave Hancock got the first of his two tries of the day and prop Mark O¹Connell had a solo effort on the right wing. Thereafter the game became something of a procession of tries as the Scottish heads went down in the face of the onslaught and the Irish fitness and experience told.  Brett Maron completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute with a fine solo effort as he slalomed through the Scots from the half-way line. On the final whistle Alex Sloane battered through the Irish line from five metres out for a consolation try for the visitors.
