7.1.14: gps for
having free storage
7.5.21: intro
. all woods start to look the same after a few miles off-road,
but gps puts up virtual street signs all of the world;
so you can bury valuables in locations that are not easily found
atleast if no one is tracking you .
. if you fear that short passwords are told by the little birds,
then you'd likely think gps is no way to keep track of where you buried
your treasure,
but,
you can lengthen the amount of usable info by burying in many
places
. also,
you can have an automated gps reader that remembers the gps for you
. it then tells you how to find treasure only by giving relative
instructions,
so that when you start from any random location,
then it tells you to take a left or right turn now,
so you don't have to know where you are .

gps`security
7.5.17: loss of
satellite
. in the event of a war against a high-tech nation,
we could lose the satellites that enable gps
--. satellites are a key military tech:
. if they can read from a pocket gps device,
they can also eavesdrop on any cell phone communication,
and in developing countries like afghanistan,
the cell and messengers are the only way to telecom .
7.3.21:
co.usa/gps/all the world can ... tell us where they are!
. the military gave in about letting others use it`s satellite gps
navigation
because they needed time to make the system tell the location of anyone
using it;
so instead of just being a liability, it would be an assist .
cheney-spokane trails
6.7.9: summary
. cheney-fishlake trail has been identified, and is accessable by
vehicle;
but until you get south of 44th st,
spokane city dictates there should be no wagons on trails;
the spirit of that being that bikers are expected to go single file
when meeting those coming from the opp.direction
. also, as a nature walk,
it's bristling on both sides with development or traffic,
though it does have rabbit, deer, and some awesome rock formations
. it may be an interesting way to avoid traffic between the 13th and
44th blocks
if you can hack your wagon to the size a wheelchair,
and it helps to look like an enclosed wheel chair rather than a wagon .
6.3.20
map"cheney-spokane corridor
. the obvious way to cheney by hpv is the
cheney-spokane (cs) rd
. marshall road is one way to get onto cs rd besides i-195
. a sure paved way is that the (2nd, 3rd ave) biway
has a branch"sunset blvd,
and then the easiest grade is usually to be found by following a rail;
so, shortly after sunset blvd,
branch left again onto inland empire way
which parallels I-195 on the opposite side from marshall rd
. taking a right on 23rd, it soon crosses I-125 and then terminates
into
marshal on the left
and thorpe rd on the right .
. after 4 miles on thorpe, a left on grove takes you to the town of
marshall which has a cs rd connection
. but if mobi can handle the terrain on marshal, it's out of city
limits,
so law goes to the county? or state -- the good lord likely called it
[/]marshall rd
because being unpaved, it would be Spokane Phil`s
only escape from marshalls telling him
the side of a road is no place to camp! .
6.4.17: aerial photo
. study map to name photo assumed to be near cheney trail
I was confused for a while because I thought the cheney bus
takes a left branch off I-90 right after leaving spokane,
but the place I was thinking of is I-90 just veering left .
. I knew it was the bus route because I recognized
the very high triple bridges that cross what is apparently latah creek
. it was from this photo of these bridges
taken by art on his way here by jet,
that made me realize that the easiest way to get onto cheney trail,
is take the older bridge for sunset blvd
that accompanies the newer road bridge of I-90
. this assumes of course that the cheney trail is approachable via
gov't way rd;
there was another route I'd thought of that avoided the steep way down
riverside,
but I'm not sure how I could have done better than sunset blvd ....
from 6.3.20
proj.fin/mobi/map"cheney-spokane corridor
. ironically, the path I had chosen went right up to sunset blvd`
bridge
just before veering left onto inland empire way
. apparently I was worried about finding a paved road on the way to the
trail,
and although I did take a road that paralleled tracks to insure a level
grade,
I followed a line of tracks that diverged from the line followed by the
cheney trail,
so I would have eventually fallen into a steep grade anyway
. as for a paved road, there is a sure road from gov't way,
to marshall, through a variety of lanes .
todo"heading for ewu or just more isolation than state park
. try the inland empire way (a left fork off of sunset blvd,
just before latah creek bridge),
right on 23rd;
this goes under a bridge, and turns into a T crossing at thorpe,
and then taking a left,
thorpe soon turns into marshall, the dirt road that is identified as an
unpaved road on the map
. be prepared to find this is just a private road now,
and that the trail is contiguous but unmapped .
2006.04.19:
cheney trail dangers
. notice again some closer ways to move out of city limits than the
trail;
it might be feasable to legally car-camp outside the city,
and then ride into town for library and supplies
. fishlake-cheney is the trail on the dead rail line,
the line up to fish lake is live and problematic,
since it will be frequented by fugitives and other train-hoppers
and the transient gangs that prey on them .
6.7.9: todo
. I didn't go far enough down the trail to see if it
merged with marshall (the map doesn't say)
. try the inland empire way (a left fork off of sunset blvd,
just before latah creek bridge),
right on 23rd;
this goes under a bridge, and turns into a T crossing at thorpe,
and then taking a left,
thorpe soon turns into marshall, the dirt road that is identified as an
unpaved road on the map
. be prepared to find this is just a private road now,
and that the trail is contiguous but unmapped .
6.7.9:
map"cheney-fishlake trail
. going southwest on sunset
across nw-flowing latah creek bridge
and turning left at lindeke,
then snake for 3minutes:
right on lindeke & 8th;
left on milton & 8th
. stop before you get to gov't way,
and you'll see overhead is an abandoned train bridge
. it's the quickest way to get off road and onto the trail,
but it requires going over a rotten wood-slatted bridge
(only a problem on wet dark nights)
. by car or bike,
you want the left soon after that bridge:
-- gov't way going southeast --
and then it's just over the hill:
. there's an intersection that says you're at lindeke ct & 13th ave:
. left is lindeke ct (the dead end)
. right is 13th ave to the finch arboretum
(that rd has a bus#41 coming towards the intersection)
. 45 degrees right (exactly south) is a paved road,
(map says lindeke rd -- apparently gov't way turns into lindeke)
cyclist`s access to
trail
. so you're at gov't way, lindeke, & 13th,
then slightly to the left (east) is an apparent unpaved road;
but a sidewalk is blocking easy access to vehicles,
and as you follow it to the right (going southeast again)
you find the road has been deliberately
ditched to stop car traffic
. there is a car path however
(for now, anyway -- the area is under construction) ...
car`s access to trail
. so you're at gov't way or lindeke, & 13th,
then going south down lendeke, you veer to the left
and it becomes 16th ave (map says)
. the bridge that you come to next
holds the cheney trail
. on the right, just before that bridge,
a road has been cut by a new housing development
(not too smart trespassing a construction site)
but then across from that,
is another dirt road that is parallel to the cheney trail
and eventually merges with
(it's a steep 3ft hill meant for motorized emergency access) .
--. if you crossed the cheney trail at the 16th st access
and then just kept going straight,
you'd find that you'd be headed
right where the fence has been cut
(I was startled by a 6point buck getting up from it`s nap
while on the part near the end of lindeke ct`s dead end;
so, this fence might serve to clear the highway
that runs parallel with the trail for the entire part I was on
--. I had stopped at the place where there's a house right next to the
trail;
having a fear of dogs without a cell phone or a companion ) .
23rd ave is the 2nd bridge under the trail;
it has a bus#41 route

which has another way of getting a wagon onto the trail

not clear what the clearing or it's lighting or for,
except in anticipation of construction .
44,
. notice housing construction has built an access into the trail .
(map says this is 16th ave)
47,

5.12.17: bike routes

is there a gov listing of bike routes?
. the centenial trail behind park hotel has sign showing extent of

the trail goes as far north as carlson rd,
and turns right to 9-mile rd .
. after the park segment,
it goes up north up howard,
and west on maxwell
to pettet, loop, and wright dr
. according to the milestone map [@]

(why dog-preventing enclosures are needed) .
6.12.14: riverside state park

so the toilet is just the price of parking

7.2.16:
proj"spokane topo mapping
. the lib#main`2nd-floor`ref.desk has geological survey topological
maps showing elevation rates with
20ft contour intervals
. there is no sure easy way to riverside state park;
because, although there is a way to the left shore of the river,
there is no road that stays with the shore,
eg, govt way had possibly steep place at a line with spraque
. as a reference I looked at 2 known hills: monroe south of the
interstate,
and the entrance to peaceful valley
. easier than riverside might be
going via sunset blvd, right on gov't way,
to take a zig-zag of roads that follow the tracks;
another right brings you to the bottom of riverside
. easier still would be to just park near peaceful valley
and walk in with the dolly
. there seems to be no easy way getting back into the city if your
brakes can manage getting out;
the entire west side is defined by the river`s canyon
. south of the mailbox (left at 29th & grand)
is a big patch of green (park or end of city?) .
. northwest has albi stadium and a cemetary with much vacant area that
is close to a shopping mall,
and then out of the city is 291 (again, steep) .
. I was recalling that google.maps had something like graphic
contouring
with it`s satellite photo's:
"(
6.10.11/proj.fin/mobi/site-finding with
google`map&satellite:
. google`map`satelite views are a great way to look geographical

(they still have the firestation site
looking like the park I first knew it as),
and the precision can be a bit off:
asking for the madisons, I got pointed at the other end of the block
. what's really cool is the way you can switch back and forth,
finding things by street and then seeing how the place is zoned
. the easiest way in and out of downtown is
w clark follows the river through peaceful valley,
and turns into w main, and that is a place you could park it
(for a short time during the day) and then walk up the steep main hill
which levels out at monroe
. going out of the city, clark merges into riverside,
which merges into w gov't way .
) .
7.2.17:
trans.city`limits
. finding ways out of the city to car-camp safely,
and then back in for supplies
. spokane`s west side is very hilly,
but that region of the city has wifi through a library close to the
edge of the city,
and it's close to a dump station and year-round free outhouse bathrooms,
both at the state park, and often at the gondolas
. in the nw part of spokane, there is a corridor without hills,
along indian trail rd
. following gov't way will take you out of city limits and into a
cemetary
before reaching any hills .
7.2.18:
. meenach bridge was only needed if using nw blvd;
can instead take monroe north,
left on broadway;
right on summit
which turns into west point rd briefly,
and then into pettet dr
(which runs parallel to the original centenial trail at that point
. after meenach it turns into downriver driver
but from the google`map, the road up from under the bridge is very
steep,
and to compensate there is a dirt road made by bikes
. after the bowl & pitcher, it turns into aubrey pkwy .
another way is up nw blvd;
left on glass;
turns into columbia circle;
then if you circle around or do nearly a 180,
sort of backtracking but to the right
then you're going north on downriver dr .
7.2.20:

hwy#195 and has a path to 23rd
which is the gate to thorpe
and marshall,
. king of road map shows sunset and 2nd-3rd are state
highways;
brown and div are too
7.2.19: downriver
drive access
. a problem with getting onto downriver drive early
is that this is a winding road, and cars go too fast on it;
whereas going far north and then backtracking onto it
would have you going through neighborhoods where cars expect a lot of
bikes and children .
. francis + 9-mile are a part of a hwy (291) -- shouldn't be on
that .
todo: [done]
. g'map columbia circle as a nw blvd-bowl&pitcher connect:
satellite shows that is a good connection .
todo: [done]
. g`map close ups of sewage plant`s bridge to state park:
it shows the road going to the bridge
is connected by some sort of structure (a parking lot?)
. satellite maps cannot show details like hyper ramps that only
pedestrians could cross,
nor gates or poles meant to stop vehicles
but after the bridge there seem to be dirt roads with tire tracks .
. off-city place near albi stadium
is either state park (ranger`s)
or memorial park (private?) and being green,
it's likely mowed and also gets traffic from mourners
ie, could ditch a vehicle there in a pinch,
but not be there during the day .
[21: but that does look livable:
. it's close to bowl&pitcher dump station and water source;
in the day time one could be lounge there,
and then at night there will likely be no activity in the cemetary
. the tween is very steep though, and requires the circuitous route
down nw blvd to get up downriver drive . ]-21
google.map to find
both non-city and non-[private cemetary]
. g`map riverside to gov't (just past creek);
. there is sliver between city`s riverside mem'park,
and greenwood mem'terrace
that is both non-city and non-private cemetary
. the distinction is trivial since these cemeteries are apparently
side-by-side
(there are many trees but the capillary road structure covers that
entire area);
however,
it was an irrelevant question anyway,
because just minutes up the road (gov way; left: greenwood rd; right:
rimrock dr)
is the county`s palisades park
... nevertheless,
the only way to avoid very steep hills
would be staying on gov way which appears to use a bridge over the
feared steep spot
. you can only go up the road far as the military cemetery before
facing more hills;
but, along the way, there is sfcc, mukogawa fort wright college, and
what was once a gravel pit
. there is also a centennial rest station in that area,
although it might be closed in the winter and thus not a reliable dump
station
( vaguely recall the centennial
bathrooms near gonzaga being closed
due
to the growing problem with crime in that area)
. it's [not] likely the public can have power wifi at sfcc,
[7.6.1: last time I checked ewu, they had switched to students-only
wifi]
. at night, when the city`s car camping restrictions were a concern,
there are the nearby off-city cemeteries:
greenwood mem'terrace, and a sliver of riverside mem'park
. and the npr at sfcc will come in crystal clear!
7.4.16:
. the cemetary on the left appears to have a resident caretaker .
7.4.16: gov't way
#north impassable:
. the bus route is going the same way I decided on for getting into the
sfcc area;
but today`s check has been an alarming reminder that it's not just
about
avoiding steep grades, but also finding roads that are either
passable, 2-laned, or shouldered
. if the road is impassable,
then I have to travel at the twilight hours, when the traffic is sparse
-- but that's also the time when the traffic is more wild .
landmarks:
. the universalist church [@] (google spokane universalist)
is just inside the spokane border, and accessable from the opposite way
(coming from sfcc)
. the cemetary on the left appears to have a resident caretaker .
. the meenach bridge area looks passable, [17:
so, the sfcc area should be accessable via pettet drive ] .
7.4.17:
. checking map data against bus observations,
I find that when I'd decided to take gov't way from peaceful valley,
I had overlooked that the road over the creek is about as steep as they
get !
but perhaps I had thought that was a mistake by the map (like the one
on monroe bridge)
in which they have the riverbank`s elevations crossing the bridge
. I need to try that route again,
this time noting where I am,
because no street should be too steep on dry pavement with good brakes
for holding onto frequent rest.stops
--. no wonder ksfc is not heard well in parts of spokane:
the spokane` riverbank goes up about 120 ft higher than the radio`s

. it's a 2006 edition compared to 2007 satellinte pict's
)
7.3.4:
. compare art`s picts trying to orient which direction
and which side of the river the bowl&pitcher is on;
but, it's not until the detail of art`s maps that I can orient myself,
because the google`maps don't know about the roads leading to that camp
and even by satellite it's difficult to see them under the trees
. from enhancing the photo's it seems apparent that
the section they didn't map well happens to be under a bed of snow,
so even the rangerstation is hidden even with no tree overhead .
. enhanced google`map saves, and experimented with xpw.photostudio`s
stitch feature,
since the only way I know to save the satelite portions
is to copy the screen, clip, and stitch
. I tried making the firefox screen full width
by looking at the html code, but nothing was not obvious
. art`s map shows another way to aubrey pkwy (the road to
bowl&pitcher):
to the right of albi stadium is assembly rd;
going north it becomes 9-mile rd;
-- pass by royal, and lyon --
left on woodside;
left on rifle club rd;
that becomes aubrey pkwy
and that's a large patch of non-city that is not hilly
(atleast it's parallel to the canyon) .
. art`s map does not show this google`map feature:
a bridge crossing from the waste station to the state park
[18: but maybe that feature is less than a year old ]
7.2.19: art`s
recreation map
. art`s rec map has range coords and they are the gps coords,
which can be known as initials of either
(north, east) or (top, right)
. just as math coord's are positive in the {top, right} directions
though in math the x (east) cords are first,
while in gps, the first coord is north
. the gps integer increments are about 5miles (about the width of
spokane)
7.3.25: art`s pict's:
. after seeing pict"(aerial spokane long river P1010013-5) I became
aware that
the maze of roads outside art`s jet`window is just north of the
spokane`s peaceful valley exit
. the 3 bridges over the river are (foot path to centenial, maple,
monroe) .
7.2.20: a-economy
storage access
. not easy getting to a-economy storage ? ...
take 4th and turn left sometime before div to land on pacific;
take the left after crossing browne .
7.3.x:
. the easiest way for small inout is to just park the mobi wherever you
feel like,
and then use the hand cart to move between sto and mobi .
7.2.21:
. there are 3ways to leave the place:
#left:
. takes you to division, which you might get away with,
since you're in the left lane,
and after a block you can take a left on sprague;
but, coming in from 4th, you have to clog that left lane for 3blocks .
#straight:
. state st is not good unless saturday has sparce traffic
because you have to cross 2nd ave at a point where the left lane is
covered with cars;
however,
you could decide to stay in the right lane of 2nd,
and then take a right on some road that not too busy
(keep in mind though that 2nd and 3rd are state highways,
although 2nd does say it is a bike route, as is 4th .
#right:
. pacific goes by the charity house,
and there seems to be a lot of standing around,
atleast across the street by guys who might not be homeless (wink) .
british paths
5.9.24: mobilehome
seed kit# lite for europe
. consider a much more lightweight kit for dropping down into europe;
and see what is available in their hardware stores
. the americans are too big-car -centric and not bike-friendly,
and there could be a lot of hostility to something my pedal-powered
mobilehome
-- not only slow as a bike but also wide as a car !
. whereas, europeans already have such things on the road
. on the other hand, you could also check for bike-friendly cities
5.12.23:
euro.residence? spend your dollars in the usa
www.velomobileusa.com
: . As a result of the U.S. budget and trade deficits
the dollar has declined to the point that it now costs almost 40% more
(as of 5.01.20)
to import European goods than it did three years ago.
7.5.12: brit currency
conversion
. if a brit mov is an option,
see how much the wallet would be hit converting currency; find the
research that located the brit min wage, and find out prices of things
you'll buy
(remember the vat is part of the health insurance, so subtract that)
7.5.12:
finance.yahoo.com/currency shows that brit lb has been
sliding down relative to usa for the past 5 yrs .
-- from 0.7 usa to 0.5 usa --
. by contrast, it's getting easier for usa to buy from japan .
7.5.13:
. after europe formed a union, they had to contend with liberalizing
immigration between member nations,
and there is a flood of very cheap labor that is creating a hot economy;
meanwhile, usa is borrowing too much .
