About the Author
Helen Adams Keller
Helen Keller was an American author and lecturer, who, having overcome considerable physical handicaps, served as an inspiration for other afflicted people. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When 19 months old, she was stricken with an acute illness that left her deaf and blind. No method could be found to educate her until the age of seven, when she began her special education in reading and writing with Anne Mansfield Sullivan of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. She quickly learned to read by the Braille system and to write by means of a specially constructed typewriter. In 1890 Keller learned to speak after only one month of study. Ten years later, she was able to enter Radcliffe College, from which she graduated with honors in 1904. Keller then served on the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. Throughout her life she worked and raised funds for the American Foundation for the Blind, and she traveled and lectured in many countries, including England, France, Italy, Egypt, South Africa, Australia, and Japan. Keller was also a pacifist and was active in socialist causes. After World War II (1939-1945), she visited wounded veterans in American hospitals and lectured in Europe on behalf of the physically handicapped.

John F Kennedy
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States and the youngest person ever to be elected president. He was also the first Roman Catholic president and the first president to be born in the 20th century.
Kennedy was assassinated before he completed his third year as president. His achievements, both foreign and domestic, were therefore limited. Nevertheless, his influence was worldwide, and his handling of the Cuban missile crisis may have prevented war. Young people especially admired him, and perhaps no other president was so popular. He brought to the presidency an awareness of the cultural and historical traditions of the United States and an appreciation of intellectual excellence. Because Kennedy eloquently expressed the values of 20th-century America, his presidency had an importance beyond its legislative and political achievements

Robert F Kennedy
Robert F Kennedy was a U.S. political leader and legislator, brother of President John F. Kennedy, born in Brookline, Massachusetts. Kennedy interrupted his undergraduate studies at Harvard University to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he returned to Harvard and in 1948 received a B.A. degree. He was awarded an LL.B. degree from the University of Virginia in 1951. Later that year he became an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, leaving that post the following year to manage the senatorial campaign of his older brother, John. Following the campaign, Robert Kennedy returned to government service as counsel to several Senate subcommittees. He first gained national prominence as chief counsel of the Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee in its investigation of Teamster Union executives David Beck and James Hoffa.
In 1960, following the election of his brother to the presidency, Robert Kennedy was appointed U.S. attorney general. His tenure in that office was marked by active enforcement of civil rights laws. He resigned his cabinet post in 1964 and in the same year was elected U.S. senator from New York. As senator, Kennedy showed himself to be particularly concerned with the problems of urban ghettos and of the poor and disadvantaged.
In the spring of 1968 Kennedy, who sharply differed with some of the policies of President Lyndon B. Johnson, campaigned for the Democratic Party nomination. By June 1968, he had won major preference primaries in Indiana, Nebraska, and California. Upon leaving a celebration in Los Angeles after his victory in the California primary was assured, Kennedy was shot by the Jerusalem-born Jordanian Sirhan Bishara Sirhan and the following day, June 6, 1968. His gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery is near that of President Kennedy.

Ted Kennedy
Edward M Kennedy is member of the United States Senate from Massachusetts. He is known for his championship of social legislation. The youngest child of American businessman Joseph P. Kennedy, he was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University and the University of Virginia, from which he received a law degree in 1959. The following year he became an assistant district attorney for Suffolk County, Massachusetts. In 1962 he was elected to fill the unexpired Senate term of his brother John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who had become U.S. president.
Reelected in 1964, Kennedy became highly respected for his well-researched, clearly defined social-welfare legislation. In 1969 his colleagues elected him Senate majority whip, and he was widely regarded as a Democratic front-runner for the U.S. presidency. On July 18, 1969, however, Kennedy drove his car off a narrow bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, and his only passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, was drowned. The event, in which he was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident, seemed to quash his presidential hopes. Despite his reelection to the Senate the following year, he lost his bid for reelection as majority whip. Returned to the Senate again in 1976, he campaigned hard for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1980 but lost to incumbent President Jimmy Carter. During the 1980s, he was a leading liberal critic of the Reagan administration. The voters of Massachusetts returned Kennedy to the Senate in subsequent elections.

John Lackland
John, called John Lackland, was the king of England from 1199 to 1216, best known for signing the Magna Carta. John was born in Oxford on December 24, 1167, the youngest son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Henry provided for the eventual inheritance of his lands by his older sons before John was born. By 1186, however, only Richard I, the Lion-Hearted, and John were left as Henry's heirs. In 1189, as Henry neared death, John joined Richard's rebellion against their father, and when Richard was crowned, he gave John many estates and titles. John tried but failed to usurp the Crown while Richard was away on the Third Crusade. Upon returning to England, Richard forgave him. When his brother died in 1199, John became king. A revolt ensued by the supporters of Arthur of Brittany, the son of John's brother, Geoffrey. Arthur was defeated and captured in 1202, and John is believed to have had him murdered. King Philip II of France continued Arthur's war until John had to surrender nearly all his French possessions in 1204. In 1207 John refused to accept the election of Stephen Langton as archbishop of Canterbury. Pope Innocent III then excommunicated him and began negotiating with Philip for an invasion of England. Desperate, John surrendered England to the pope and in 1213 received it back as a fief. Trying to regain his French possession, he was decisively defeated by Philip in 1214. John's reign had become increasingly tyrannical; to support his wars he had extorted money, raised taxes, and confiscated properties. His barons finally united to force him to respect their rights and privileges. John had little choice but to sign the Magna Carta presented to him by his barons at Runnymede in 1215, making him subject, rather than superior, to the law. Shortly afterward John and the barons were at war. He died at Newark in Nottinghamshire on October 19, 1216, while still pursuing the campaign, and was succeeded by his son, Henry III.

D H Lawrence
David Herbert Lawrence was an English novelist and poet, ranked among the most influential and controversial literary figures of the 20th century. In his more than 40 books he celebrated his vision of the natural, whole human being, opposing the artificiality of modern industrial society with its dehumanization of life and love. His novels were misunderstood, however, and attacked and even suppressed because of their frank treatment of sexual matters.

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and one of the great leaders in American history. A humane, far-sighted statesman in his lifetime, he became a legend and a folk hero after his death. Lincoln rose from humble backwoods origins to become one of the great presidents of the United States. In his effort to preserve the Union during the Civil War, he assumed more power than any preceding president. If necessity made him almost a dictator, by fervent conviction he was always a democrat. A superb politician, he persuaded the people with reasoned word and thoughtful deed to look to him for leadership. He had a lasting influence on American political institutions, most importantly in setting the precedent of vigorous executive action in time of national emergency.

Louis XVI
Louis XVI was king of France from 1774 to 1792, who lost his throne in the French Revolution and was later beheaded by the revolutionary regime.
Louis was born at Versailles on August 23, 1754, the grandson of Louis XV. The deaths of his two elder brothers and of his father, only son of Louis XV, made the young prince the Dauphin of France in 1765. In 1770 he married Marie-Antoinette, youngest daughter of Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria. On Louis's accession, France was impoverished and burdened with debts, and heavy taxation had resulted in widespread misery among the French people. Immediately after he was crowned, aided by such capable statesmen as Finance Minister Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, baron de l'Aulne, Interior Minister Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, and Foreign Minister Charles Gravier, comte de Vergennes, Louis remitted some of the most oppressive taxes and instituted financial and judicial reforms. Greater reforms were prevented, however, by the opposition of the upper classes and the court. So strong was this opposition that in 1776 Turgot was forced to resign and was replaced by financier Jacques Necker.
After Louis granted financial aid to the American colonies revolting against Great Britain in the New World, Necker proposed drastic taxes on the nobility. He was forced to resign in 1781, and statesman Charles Alexandre de Calonne, appointed finance minister in 1783, borrowed money for the court until 1786, when the borrowing limit was reached. The anger of the French people against taxes and the lavish spending of the court resulted in 1788 in the recall of Necker, who, however, could not prevent the bankruptcy of the government. In 1788 Louis was forced to call for a meeting of the representative governmental body called the Estates-General, the first gathering of that assembly in 175 years. Once in session, the Estates-General assumed the powers of government. On July 14, 1789, the Parisian populace razed the Bastille, and a short time later imprisoned the king and royal family in the palace of the Tuileries. In 1791 the royal family attempted to escape to Austria, but they were caught and brought back to Paris. Louis swore obedience to the new French constitution in 1791, but continued secretly to work against the revolution and to plot intrigues with France's enemies. In 1792, when the National Convention, the assembly of elected French deputies, declared France a republic, the king was tried as a traitor and condemned to death. Louis XVI was guillotined on January 21, 1793, in the Place de la Révolution in Paris.
Historians consider Louis XVI a victim of circumstances rather than a despot similar to the former French kings Louis XIV and Louis XV. He was weak and incapable as king and not overly intelligent. He preferred to spend his time at hobbies, such as hunting and making locks, rather than at his duties of state, and he permitted his wife to influence him unduly.

In a distinguished public career that covered more than 40 years, he worked for American independence, helped to establish the government of the new nation, and went on to participate in that government as congressman, secretary of state, and ultimately president. His intense concern for religious and intellectual freedom led him to seek the strongest possible safeguards of individual liberty. More than any other person, Madison can be considered responsible for making the Bill of Rights part of the Constitution.

Mary, Queen of Scots
Mary, Queen of Scots, also Mary Stuart, was the daughter of James V, king of Scotland, by his second wife, Mary of Guise.
Born in Linlithgow in December 1542, Mary became queen before she was a week old. Raised in France, in 1558 she was married to the Dauphin, who succeeded to the French throne as Francis II in 1559 but died the next year. Mary returned to Scotland in 1561. Although Roman Catholic, at first she accepted the Protestant-led government that she found in place. Her chief minister was her half brother James Stuart, whom she soon afterward created Earl of Moray.
Mary's marriage in 1565 to her cousin, the Catholic Scottish nobleman Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, was performed with Roman Catholic rites. The marriage aroused Protestant feelings and was the signal for an insurrection by Moray and a Scottish noble family who hoped to be joined by the whole Protestant party. Their hope was disappointed, however, and the queen, taking the field in person, at once quelled the revolt. Her triumph was scarcely over when misunderstandings began to arise between her and Darnley. She had given him the title of king, but he now demanded that the crown be secured to him for life and that, if the queen died without children, it should descend to his heirs.
Before Moray's rebellion Mary's secretary and adviser had been David Rizzio, a court favorite and a Roman Catholic. The king was now persuaded that Rizzio was the obstacle to his designs upon the crown. Acting on this belief, he entered into a formal compact with Moray; Lord Patrick Ruthven; James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton; and other leaders of the Protestant party. The result of this conspiracy was the murder of Rizzio in 1566. Early in 1567 the house in which Darnley lay sick was blown up by gunpowder, probably at the instigation of the Scottish nobleman James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who, since Moray's revolt and still more since Rizzio's murder, had been favored by the queen. Darnley was discovered strangled close by the scene of the explosion. It was suspected that Mary herself was not wholly ignorant of the plot. Evidence substantiating this theory is reflected in incriminating letters and sonnets, allegedly written by Mary to Bothwell and found later that year in a silver casket. Bothwell was brought to a mock trial and acquitted; soon afterward he divorced his wife and married Mary in a Protestant ceremony. This step at once turned the Scottish nobles against Mary. She was able to lead an army against them, and although it was equal in number to the confederate army, it was visibly inferior in discipline. On June 15, 1567, Mary's forces were defeated at Carberry Hill, and she was forced to abandon Bothwell and surrender herself to the confederate lords. On July 24, at Lochleven, she was prevailed upon to sign an act of abdication in favor of her son, who was crowned as James VI five days afterward at Stirling. Escaping from her island-prison at Lochleven on May 2, 1568, she was able within a few days to assemble an army of 6000 men. On May 12 her army was defeated by the regent Moray at Langside, near Glasgow. Four days afterward, in spite of the entreaties of her best friends, Mary crossed Solway Firth and sought refuge at the court of Elizabeth I, queen of England, only to find herself a prisoner of Elizabeth for life.
Of the ensuing intrigues to effect her deliverance and to place her on the throne of England, the most famous was that of Mary's page, Anthony Babington, who plotted to assassinate Elizabeth. The conspiracy was discovered, and Mary was brought to trial in October 1586. She was sentenced to death on October 25, but not until February 1, 1587, did Elizabeth sign the warrant of execution, which was carried out a week later.

Mary II
Mary II was queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1689 to 1694, born in London. She was the daughter of James, duke of York-who in 1685 became king of England as James II-and his first wife, Anne Hyde. Although her father was a convert to Roman Catholicism, Mary was brought up as a Protestant and was married at the age of 15 to the Dutch Protestant prince William of Orange. In 1688, English opponents of James, unhappy with his autocratic rule and favoritism toward Roman Catholics, initiated the Glorious Revolution, forcing James into exile and giving the throne to Mary and William. They were crowned as joint rulers in April 1689. Mary governed as regent while William was campaigning in Ireland and on the Continent, but for the most part she simply carried out policies formulated by her husband. William continued to rule alone after her death.

William McKinley
William McKinley was the 25th president of the United States. McKinley led an administration that marked the beginning of vast changes in American attitudes and ways of living. During his administration the United States emerged from more than a century of isolation from world affairs to become one of the great powers of the world. His election in 1896 stifled demands for radical economic and social reforms, but his assassination at the beginning of his second term paved the way for the moderate reforms that followed.
Although he was extremely popular, McKinley was not a strong president. He was opposed to going to war with Spain to liberate Cuba but took no effective action to prevent it. He was in sympathy with the plight of farmers and laborers who were being victimized by the growing economic and political power of big business, but he believed that it was the result of natural forces with which the government had no right to interfere.

Walter Mondale
Walter Mondale was the vice president of the United States. Mondale was born on January 5, 1928, in Ceylon, Minnesota. He studied at Macalester College and at the University of Minnesota Law School and practiced law privately from 1956 to 1960. Appointed in 1960 to fill an unexpired term as Minnesota attorney general, he was subsequently twice elected to that post. When Hubert H. Humphrey resigned from the U.S. Senate on his election as vice president, Mondale, a protégé, was appointed to the seat. He was elected to the Senate in 1966 and 1972 and became known as a liberal humanitarian, concerned with problems of housing, child welfare, aging, and civil rights. He ran briefly for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1974, but withdrew on finding that he lacked the “determination to do what is required to seek the presidency.” He campaigned vigorously, nevertheless, after the Democratic presidential candidate, Jimmy Carter, chose him as his running mate in 1976. As vice president, Mondale expanded the office into that of close presidential adviser and troubleshooter. After running unsuccessfully for reelection with Carter in 1980, he returned temporarily to practicing law. He won the party's presidential nomination after a grueling primary battle in 1984, but he and Geraldine A. Ferraro, his running mate, were resoundingly defeated by the incumbent, Ronald Reagan, in the general election. He served as U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996.

James Monroe
Monroe, James was the fifth president of the United States and the last of the so-called Virginia dynasty of U.S. presidents. He succeeded his lifelong friends Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the nation's highest office. Monroe was a man of good intelligence, sound judgment, and highest integrity. In more than 40 years of public service, he never stinted of his energies in doing what he considered his public duty.
Monroe was president during the “Era of Good Feelings.” It was called that because there were few political battles and his Democratic-Republican Party ruled almost unopposed. It was a transitional period in which the nation's democratic institutions and capitalist economy were taking form. National identity, as opposed to narrow state interest, was growing as evidenced by the westward movement and the construction of roads and canals. People who were leaving their old colonial homes and moving west on the expanding frontier began to think of themselves not as Virginians or New Yorkers, but principally as Americans. The roads and canals, or internal improvements as they were called, were built to tie together the nation's commerce. They were considered a national priority and were often funded by Congress, whose members understood that an improved flow of commerce in any section of the country would also benefit their own constituencies.
Even though one party dominated, political debate did not disappear. Factions developed in the party over questions about tariffs; the future of slavery; and how to deal with Britain and other European colonial powers. As President, Monroe consistently and successfully pursued a policy that served both to protect the United States from European interference and to foster unhampered growth of the nation and its economy. He was responsible for the Monroe Doctrine, the principle that the United States would not tolerate new colonies in the western hemisphere or interference by outside powers in the internal affairs of nations in the western hemisphere.

Benito Mussolini was a premier-dictator of Italy; the founder and leader (Il Duce) of Italian Fascism. Mussolini was born in Predappio on July 29, 1883, the son of a socialist blacksmith. Largely self-educated, he became a schoolteacher and socialist journalist in northern Italy. In 1910 he married Rachele Guidi, who bore him five children. Mussolini was jailed for his opposition to Italy's war in Libya. Soon after that, he was named editor of Avanti!, the Socialist Party newspaper in Milan. When World War I began, in 1914, Mussolini first denounced it as “imperialist,” but he soon reversed himself and called for Italy's entry on the Allied side. Expelled from the Socialist Party, he started his own newspaper in Milan, Il Popolo d'Italia (The People of Italy), which later became the organ of the Fascist movement.

He was elected president of the United States in 1968 in one of the closest presidential elections in the nation’s history and in 1972 was reelected in a landslide victory.
